Ward would probably get a career high payday vs Bute, probably obtain a larger fanbase, and more credibility from the "hardcore" boxing fans. He made a stupid mistake passing on Bute.
Bute is locked with Froch for two fights that will be watched and attended by tons of fans, despite a fictitious p4p moniker and rating.
Too early. About 1, max 2 fights too early. The winner of Bute-Froch for Ward, the winner of Pascal-Cloud for Dawson, need to be on the menu. Showtime has a very specific agenda for both Bute (still contractually linked with them) and Ward (not sure anymore, conflicting observations) which, like the entire tournament, is dragging on and on and on..... make that superfight already, in NYC @ MSG please. After that, the winner can go on to LHW and try to achieve greatness there being a serious P4P candidate. And that's when Dawson-Ward could happen - on HBO. Plus, who said HBO agreed to let go of Dawson who just won a big fight on their network?
This means that Showtime thinks the fight would not sell and that they will lose money. God knows how much money Ward asked for this fight. Even Showtime knows that this fight will be dull and ugly between two decision fighters. Both fighters have unfinished businesses at their categories. Chad should fight Pascal, Ward should fight his mandatory and Bute in September/November and only then should think at other weight classes.
Showtime also rejected Bute-Froch. They have one fight in mind: Ward-Bute. They spent a lot of money to crown the SMW king and the job is not done yet.
To prove your point I am buying tickets to Berto/Ortiz II at the Staples Center. I did not buy tickets to Dawson/Hopkins at the same venue. Not sure if I would for Ward/Dawson if it was in Staples but probably would if it was in the smaller, closer Home Depot Center. edit: I attended Ward/Abraham at the Home Depot Center (a great venue) for $25 (ringside was $200, I think) and was able to move into unoccupied $100 seats for the main event. AA brought a lot of the crowd that was there; I'd say about 50/50 with AA's crowd in the higher dollar seats.
I am also attending Berto vs Ortiz. I had no intentions of attending any Hopkins or Dawson fight. Don't get me wrong guys, I am a huge boxing fan. I believe we need to pay more attention than p4p lists, ratings and so forth.
i'm a purist. i love the science/art of boxing. i look forward to dawson/ward. i can understand the need to let it marinate a bit more so both guys can make the money deserve for fighting each other. if and when the fight happens...i will be watching. i think it's a ppv worthy fight.
Why will Ward not just wait until Bute/Froch is over? Seriously? What is he hiding from? That is the only fight Showtime is giong to accept. . And I HOPE HBO makes a stand as well. . . Ward/Dawson is a meaningful fight; well, not as much as it would be if Ward proved he really is the number one SMW. . But still, it's a competitive fight, but it would be SOOOOO BORING!
I love the science of the sport too. . But I think the science only truly comes out when you have a counter-puncher, boxing purist like Dawson, or Ward fighting an aggressive boxer/puncher type like a Kessler, Froch, etc. The only time a style fight like this should happen is if it is to determine "the best of the division". . . So, if Ward/Bute first took place, and Ward won, THEN I'd be pushing for this fight. This content is protected
I also think Showtime guys are still mad at Ward for not fighting Bute. I mean the only reason they did the three-fight exclusivity deal was to secure Bute for the tournament winner and Ward just spit them in the face after the S6 final. They gave Bute 6mil $ to fight Ward and now Ward screw them up big-time...
I agree. . They made Ward's career. . . Now the guy is bitching out of a Bute fight? Why the hell does he not want to truly, once and for all, put to rest that he is the best SMW? Now if Froch ices Bute come the end of May, then he's home free. . LOL, you know he's just PRAYING that Froch shatters Bute.
