100,000 sales bring in big money for Sky, but its not self-perpetuating. Its the end game to building a career. Hatton made a fortune on the Mayweather and Pac PPVs because of years of building and investment. The PPV wasnt the norm, it was the exception and a massive cash-out for Hatton and Sky after all the hard work. The current spate of PPV isnt worth it and it doesnt support short or long-term business. Limiting your audience is not how you grow two prospects (which both men are), same with the Olympians what a waste of their potential and careers. Sky realise that for exactly what Gaz says theres nothing that will make them real money that wont end up setting them back. Fighters should ONLY go on PPV towards the end of their primes when theyre fighting the best opposition in big fights. They should be attracting big crowds and big audiences on SS1 or terrestrial consistently before that. I dont mind PPV if its a genuinely unique event and its value for money (good documentaries, interviews, top analysts, replays of their previous fights ). But the reason I havent paid for one yet (other than not having sky ) is that they just dont interest me.
He wouldn't fight Klitschko for anything less than megabucks. He's not gonna face a Helenius for a couple of hundred k, is he? It's good to see TV taking control, rather than the tail wagging the dog.
I have no idea why fighters or promoters are in a rush to get on PPV. You need to be built up overtime first. I mean look at Khan in the USA. Its not like HBO are rushing to put him on PPV. Its good that Sky are taking control. They should be the key decision makers jjust like HBO are.
Frank would be wise to just run with this. His fighters need exposure and his crazy if he thinks having his own channel will see people pay to watch his cards. The likes of Cleverley and Degale need to be on Sky Sports for 2/3 more years.
There have been a number of brilliant fights, and many great occasions... Tyson/BrunoII was a amazing occasion and what got to see peak Ricardo Lopez Naseem/Kelley Hatton/Tszyu And that is just the start of the era.
The problem with Lopez was that you knew, at 4am, that it was probably another 12 rounds to go before Tyson came on!!
Wow, Haye and Harrison are probably the biggest reasons for this. Hopefully it just means PPV and not boxing in general. Primetime will take the PPVs and they aren't ready for it. Unless C5-PT-Star etc unite then its pointless.
It was an opportunity to sober up! I think Lopez got the job done in seven to help speed things along.
Sky created the problem by putting Khan vs Osin ***ans, Prescott and Salita on PPV "Khan joins the greats on PPV". They only have themselves to blame. Haye didnt help matters with his pathetic showing against Wlad, which I predicted would happen.
It was a long time ago but I'm sure I fell asleep during a Lopez fight in a Tenerife bar waiting for Tyson-Holy II. Not saying it was 100% Lopez' fault though!:cheers
Good for fight fans probably Bad news for aspiring stars like froch and khan. More opportunity for the sport to comeback to terrestrial tv. I just hope fighters and promoters don't go down the route khan and froch before him did, going on unwatched channels like primetime. I suppose they need to do, what makes them the most money, in that srnse I don't blame them. So if they know a few thousand watching ppv on primetime is better money than millions watching on free terrestrial tv, I guess they're gonna go for the option bringing in more money, and not bother about the development/future of the sport. Can't blame them, although I really hope boxing is free on tv, the big fights at prime viewing time could bring good sponsorship deals.
