So Fitzsimmons gets destroyed 2x by Jeffries yet he has a shot vs Louis and Marciano?

I dont think that a census research would do much good. I couldnt imagine anyone putting down their occupation as prize fighter, it was illegal in most parts of the country. Just like i couldnt imagine many people listing gunfighter as an occupation.

It is possibly a decent point though, i am interested to see what Janitor thinks.

I find that distance running and power lifting complement each other surprizingly well. Core strength becomes imporant in ultra distance events, and I have never had the issues that most ultra runners have.

For contrast climbing and weight lifting are pure poison to eachother!

I don't box because it tends to bring me out in bruises. I must have a rare skin condition!

    It was a pre-existing injury.

Not all superior fighters are body beautiful. Hell, Sam Langford is one of the best who ever fought and he carried around a potbelly half his career. The physique of Tommy Gibbons does not inspire fear in me, but his record is amazing.

Regarding Solis, he earned the opportunity to potentially make tens of millions of dollars and will probably get this opportunity again. This is an opportunity that is not given to him, nor is it one he gets by laziness and years of preparation. I get annoyed at the inference that modern heavies are just second raters who never train, have no acquired skills and are just in championship fights by happenstance. If one really thinks it is that easy, get to your local gym and give it a shot with your good old fashioned work ethic.

Corbett,Sullivan,Maher, Choynski, Fitz, Jeffries, Sharkey, had amature careers, like to-day the top 20 or so guys were full time, fighters like Denver Ed Smith, Maher, Slavin and Mitchell criss-crossed America and other lands, sparring, giving exhibitions, having occasional fights or taking on all-comers. Without doubt boxing was full-time then and the better guys earned a relatively good living. They had special diets, did light weights, roadwork, sprints(!) wrestling, bag work as part of their training as well as stuff like wood choping and handball. They had specialised trainers and camps like to-day , just different.
Btw I was a runner and if men the size of the Klits are doing 2 min reps at 800m they are indeed inbcredible athletics, ever watch the decathletes in the distant event?

We all know Marciano's chances are none at best.

Part of Fitz's training involved uprooting telephone posts as he ran past them at a speed which was once clocked by the Chicago Tribune at 46mph.

I thought you might chime in. I think the top 20 or so sounds like a realistic number. And Janitor brings up a good point in that fighters today have sidelines, tho I am more concerned with fighters for whom boxing is their primary income, the basis for the endorsements or other pursuits.

In the 20's many more people were boxing, tho I wonder again how many used it as a sole source of income. Even guys like Braddock had jobs loading freight or other physical labor, which must have really made training difficult.

And I guarantee that Vitali ain't breaking 2 minutes for the 800 with those knees, not anymore.

Perhaps so, but Jimmy Jeff's pro record still stands at something like 18-1-2 over 21 fights last I checked... The lone loss coming to Johnson in 1910....

Jeff was a real athlete ahead of his time for circa--1900....:deal:hey

Jeff's size, strength and power would benefit him well against ATG's like "Louis and Marciano" in a time machine.... Much more then that of Bob Fitz' skill and size would.....

Some of the time who saw Fitz felt he had a shot vs Louis! But I'm sure you know more then they did.

Very good natural structure. The steroid era clouds peoples viewpoints.

if only his neck was alittle bigger......whats the views on Fitz vs the 174 lb conn who fought louis for 13 rds? i mean if he has a cance against con then he clearly has atleast a chance against louis.

Fitz's upper body was considerably bigger than Marciano's.
