Margo would walk him down while throwing unstop punches. Cotto will last as long as his feet do. Once Cotto stops moving Margo will start to cut him down. Cotto by decision or Margo by TKO
How much did Mayorga weigh come fight time? Cotto looked small comapred to him because Mayorga probably weighed 170lbs!
Things I liked Slipping punches earlier on. Not being baited into fighting where he didn't want to. Still having a killer instinct when his opponent is hurt. Jabbed and boxed more. The old Cotto would have just walked Mayorga down. Things I didn't like Started to hunch over again and caught a few uppercuts later on. Was too reckless when in close. Appeared almost unwilling (I won't say scared to engage) at times. Appeared flustered when Mayorga did unleash wild combinations. Cotto-Margarito 2 Cotto has already stated he truly believes Margarito cheated in their first fight. This is a negative mindset, instead of admitting he didn't move his head or clinch enough in trouble, he believes he was simply bested illegaly. Some of the issues in the Mayorga fight remain from the Margarito fight, flustered when backed up with combinations and still has tendency to hunch and simply back up when under fire. Margarito still has a superb chin as shown in Pacquiao fight. Margarito can still throw punches in intense volume as shown in Pacquiao fight. Margarito did however absorb plenty of punishment in said fight. My prediction: Cotto stores up earlier rounds through establishing his jab, moving and Margarito being relatively inactive. Margarito starts to come forward and they go to war around the 4th onwards. They both start to mark up, this affects Cotto more than Margarito. Margarito starts to walk Cotto down again, around the 9th. Margarito stops Cotto late again.
Let me preface by saying I really like Miguel Cotto - he's got terrific boxing skills, fights anyone, and is consistently in exciting fights. But Saturday proved that his days as a truly elite fighter are finished. Cotto, who made a name for himself as a top-notch body puncher has completely abandoned a body attack - in his fight with Margarito, who has an iron chin, he headhunted the entire fight. He also has not brought power with him from 140 to 154 - he can't really hurt the bigger guys in the sport. Saturday also shoed his tendency to back up in straight lines and to brawl unnecessarily when pressured. I'm not saying he should retire, I just don't feel he will ever reach the upper echelons of the sport.
He still needs improvement, but to be honest, if he had move up to 154 to fight this version of Mayorga after Gomez and pulled off this performance, nobody would suggest at any moment that he should retire. In fact they'd probably say his boxing skills have improved. He won nearly every round against a bigger, more durable, and harder punching fighter without taking a lot of punishment and handling it well when he did get hit. Some old habits did creep in from time to time, but it's expected and he followed Stewart's orders well. When he told him not to back up in the 12th and put pressure, he did just that, and thumb or no thumb, he was able to hurt Mayorga good enough to make him quit.
i'll never understand while people us size as an excuse. they are all grown men a fight is a fight so be it. if you get you ass kicked or look bad size should't ever be and excuse. might be the reason but its not an excuse we aren't talking about junior hight vs high school you talking about very small hight or weight difference between grown men.
Haha some of you need to shut up. Talking about Cotto aint the same fighter. Margarito with a Shane knockout and Pac brutality unleashed on him, no bricks and has 1 win against a nobody in his last 3 fights. Seriously is he the same fighter that beat Cotto first time? Pac laid the blueprint for the smaller man to beat Margs, obviously Cotto is no Pac but he has to pick up on certain things that Pac did, try to adapt anything into his own style and take what was working against Margs first time, improve stamina, box him and win a 12rd UD.
I doubt Mayorga quit because of his hand.. Even after they had hit hands, he continued to brawl and didn't react UNTIL after Cotto landed a shot to his face which hurt him.. He was looking at his hand then and saying it was hurt, but he continue and then he quit after Cotto landed another hard flush shot to his face and he wanted no more.. He knew the fight was over and didn't want to get KO'd.. Why haven't we heard anything yet about Mayorga's hurt hand? Cotto looked alright in the fight.. Not his best, but look who he was going against.. It took Mosley 12 rounds as well to take Mayorga out..
I tend to agree with what u said. I do wish Cotto would beat Marg. However, the bold, could possibly due to Stewards style, yes Cotto of old would have been all over Mayorga. Maybe Manny has laid out a gameplane which involves more boxing, a more cautious approach and i guess its good to get the rounds in. Hell need that against Margo If he blasted Mayorga out in 3,4,5, that wouldn tell us anything, at least he can fight a decent measure pace for 12 and won the fight using the bare minimum, whcih i believe is what Manny is teaching him. Why brawl and go to war, when you can just jab and move and win the fight. Hell need this against marg because he realised last time out, he hit Marg with everything except the kitchen sink and still lost. So he knows its gonan be a long night, so he needs to save the stamina, not go for any KO and just use the jab and move about
Not only that but Mayorga kept the Mosley fight really close. Cotto won like 10 rounds and then TKO'd him. I think he looked good not his best but good nevertheless.
Hes not "too big" for 147lbs, hes just being lazy. Cotto is a small dude who started at 140lbs and secondly hes never been a power puncher like tito/hoya who are natural 147lbers to begin with. use a little bit of your brain dumb ass. The fact that Cotto ended the fight with a vicious left hook is decent in itself. However, Cotto looked average in the fight. Looked like hes forgotten to throw combinations and does no more than 1 or 2 shots at a time. As far as Margo - I don't think Cotto beats Margarito. But its worth a shot.
what hand injury...the dude got hurt swinging at air after that vicious left hook connected on his chin
