Incredible handspeed and precision with his punches. He can land four or five deadly accurate sharp punches in quicktime, and that alone makes him a threat. He's still got a lot of faults. The chin is not good, he cant fight on the inside, he gets cocky and makes hard work of easy fights. Most worrying of all is when he fights a guy who's prepared to really go for him, like Willie Limond and Michael Gomez, he always ends up in trouble. Gary St. Clair was probably a better boxer than both of those guys, but didn't even win a round because he tried to outbox Khan. Someone who's prepared to really attack Khan, and someone who has the power to finish the job, would beat him. Its worth remembering these are things that will come as he gets older. He's 21, which is incredibly young, by the time he's 26 he'll have hopefully learnt a few things about infighting and adapted to protecting himself when under pressure. If he can do this, in 4 or 5 years time I can see him being lightweight and light welterweight champion. If he goes up against Pacman, any of the Diaz's, Joan Guzman or Nate Campbell he'll get smashed up. Ricky Hatton would murder him in cold blood if they fought within the next 3 years. Khan should take a few warm up fights against reputable journeymen in the USA to raise him profile and give him experience, then aim for someone like Katsidis or Romanov. Fights with Kevin Mitchell, Carl Johansson and Jon Thaxton would also be good too. I also think this criticism of him fighting too many stiffs is bull****. He's 21 for ****s sake! He's got 10 years of career ahead of him, he can afford to take his time. If he gets rushed too soon these glaring weaknesses that he has will cost him his undefeated record and may end up ruining him, just like Panchito Bojado (remember him?) and half a dozen other also-rans who had the talent but blew it. Dont critisize him for taking his time, and dont criticize Frank Warren for bringing him along safely, because that's exactly what Khan needs (unlike Hatton and Calzaghe, who wasted years fighting bums. Kahn is a different fighter and requires a different analysis) If he goes about it right he could end up ATG...
I was overly critical of him after the Gomez fight, I expected Khan to finish a shot Gomez spectacularly. Then, a war happened. Or did it? I recently watched the fight again, & unlike the first time watching it live when the adrenaline is pumping through the veins, Khan actually gave Gomez a one sided beating. Credit to Gomez though for taking ridiculous punishment, but on a second viewing Khan handspeed was devastating. However, hes vulnerable. Hurt badly by a bodyshot & flash knockdowned by a nothing punch, its worrying. I still think Gomez should have been allowed to continue though, but thats for another thread. I think Khan can still be the real deal, but there is a big question mark that remains over his durability. He was lucky that he fought an injured Willie Limond who was inactive for nearly two years, & he was lucky he didnt face the Gomez who fought Alex Arthur. & until Khan beats a name fighter, these questions about his real dealness wont go away. Khan used to be a- on my report card, but hes straight B now.
