I don't believe he held the sub for any time to give Nog the chance to tap, as soon as they were flipped over I believe he tried for the break. He had a 20lbs+ weight advantage over Nog and had Nog trapped underneath him, there was no way Nog was getting out of there, if Mir had held the sub for a period of time and Nog hadn't tapped then I say fair game, but IMO that's not what happened, and I feel that Mir's postfight interview confirmed that.
So there is a protocol for applying the pressure gradually? To do otherwise is unsporting? What exactly are you saying?
I think you can hold a sub under certain circumstances once you have it applied and your opponent's posture controlled. I don't think that straining to break the bone immediately is the only way to apply a sub. I think you know if you are applying pressure to provoke a tap or if you are trying to break through the limb immediately. JMHO. Mir had Nog under control and had the sub locked, he could've waited for a tap before breaking it IMO.
This is a fight. Not training. Everything executed 100% intensity, no holding back. Just one of those things. Mir was in trouble and saw an oppourtunity and took it with both hands, litterally.

This is Big Nog we are talking about here. Never been subbed, awesome ground game and Mir just saw the sub and gave it everything. To do anything less would be ridiculous. Where do you draw the line? 'Oh he was winning the stand up battle anyway and i don't see why he had to hit him so hard and knock him out'
Nah, that's just silly. I disagree with you, can you not accept that? I have trained BJJ, albeit at a very amateur/low-level, but from the coaching I did receive I learned that when you have your opponent's posture/body under your control, you can hold a sub to give them time to tap. If you don't have them under complete control, you have to wrench the sub fully as quickly as you can so they tap before they can maneouvre for an escape. IMO, Mir had Nog controlled and had the sub locked. To be honest, there's zero point in continuing this because I'm not going to forget/disregard this because someone on an internet forum tells me it's wrong. No offence.

They both went into the fight ready to do serious damage and we all knew that Nog would never tap until it was too late, and that Machida said he'd rather die than tap. When I watch MMA I want to see the fighters do whatever it takes to to win within the rules. There's nothing wrong with what Mir or Bones did to their opponents saturday night. Both opponents where world class and could have tapped. Some people seemed to want a hurt and very dangerous Mir to take it easy on the toughest and best heavyweight sub specialist of all time and, they also wanted Bones to gently lay down Machida and kiss him good night, it seems. atsch
