It shouldnt even be a debate...its not illegal and it highlights your ignorance if you think it is. Go take a judges course. Pawing is boxing defense 101.

Holding the opponent or maintaining a clinch 14. Striking after the referee´s order to <<break>> or <<stop>> 15. Stepping on the opponent 16. Holding the opponent´s head or body with one hand, while hitting with the other 17. Using the open hand to fix the face or rub the glove on the opponent´s face 18. Thumbing the opponent´s eyes 19. Striking after the bell 20. Crouching the body below the opponent´s belt defensively or to strike 21. Biting or spitting on the opponent 22. Using abusive or profane language 23. Failing to obey the referee´s command 24. Giving the back and walking, or running, away from the other boxer 25. Spitting the mouthpiece. 26. Cutting or mutilate the gloves (seconds) 25. Any rough tactics other than clean punches. Hope that clears it up.
So to anyone saying its illegal: would you like to explain yourself? Cause the one thing I see in common here is that guys who claim its illegal don't say WHY it is
That **** that Wlad was doing isn't a hook, jab, uppercut, or cross. I think it should be illegal. He was also intentionally stepping on Sultan's foot. I wonder if Wlad's management/HBO would put him in there with a fighter that has decent skills, size, speed and good power. Too bad there isn't anybody out there now with those in one package. Sultan came to fight but was just too small. After the third, he knew he wasn't going to be able to get anything going -- you could tell by his body language.
Watch the first round again -- Wlad was hitting Sultan's right glove down. He was not parrying Sultan's jab as much as he was hitting down his glove just to bring it down for his jab to get through. A parry is a parry. That was borderline slapping. Still a big win for Wlad. He is the best heavy in the division and has been for a while.
Hey cardstars, Povetkin is a good prospect. I don't think he is ready for THE best heavyweight in the division just yet though. BTW I thought that referee Wayne Kelly (same ref as tonight) warned Byrd about hitting Wlad's gloves like that in their second fight :deal Neither Sultan nor his corner had a problem with the Kelly allowing it so the point is moot I guess.
Yeah, in the first round Wlad was doing his best to rip Sultan's supraspinatus muscle and give him a rotator cuff tear.
it looked pretty silly, but if it was illegal i'm sure um, lampley or lewis would say something, not to mention ol'...? silly topic - but i abstain. i had a similar "techincal" question about referee Cortez actually hitting Hatton's gloves (smacking them all night, watch the tape), and found out it was legal. i was annoyed to no end, but eh...queensbury......i was not alive at the time... Irländsk - nice avatar! come to daddy....
