Something you realized about the sport only after watching it for years?

For me, it was that styles make fights. As a newbie, i didn't fully grasp this concept. I mean boxing history is pretty much stacked with these examples. For example, Taylor beats Hopkins, Pavlik beats Taylor but Hopkins dominates Pavlik. This is what i look at first when trying to analyze an upcoming fight. I didn't as a newbie and i paid for it.

Also, fighters almost always give an excuse as to why they lost a close fight or they state that they thought they won the fight outright. I don't think these fighters necessarily believe that they won but it's just a way of justifying their loss and trying to stay relevant in the boxing world. It's almost expected behavior and it's comical at times. It's just part of boxing.

 

In general, yes. But if you looks at the great ones...

Floyd:

- Pure skill. He was able to master certain moves that is difficult to counter with.

Pac:

- Changes his styles depending who his opponent is while maintaining his strengths (footwork and a strong left).

 

That awkward does not equal unskilled. When you're highly effective, no matter what natural attributes of speed and/or power you may lack or have in abundance, if you're up at a certain world class level, there's significant skill whether you can put your finger on it or not. No matter how it looks. Old school guy that's a perfect example: Marciano. He's the best example of someone a noob can watch and say "eh. The guys today all kill him." Today's examples: Guys like Darchinyan. So very awkward looking. But you don't do what he's done without some craft. You can't just be strong. He operates oddly but he can be deceptively creative. Froch is another one from today. This is something it's taken me a long time to digest. Awkward does not equal unskilled.

 

True, but you miss the main example from today: Vitali Klitschko.

Agreed to some extent. Froch is definitely a guy i thought was trash early on but he kept on winning. He's definitely world class level. He just does it in a weird way. It's subtle but he gets it done.

But i think for the most part, these examples are the exception and not the rule. But they definitely do occur.

I don't know what you mean. I only said awkwardness does NOT mean unskilled. I didn't say if you see someone awkward, they're definitely professors of the pugilistic arts.

 

2 things i have noticed.

1. That some sportsmen are more interested in money than actually trying to make a legacy for themselves.
2. That scorecards can be shockingly questionable and just how much a noisy home crowd can unconciously sway judges decisions round by round.

what i learned is that A-side meth really do exist.

 

That two men can look similar insize outside of the ring , same height , weight etc, but when they are in the ring it looks like different sports - Hatton - Manny.
