Quarry wins easy. Sure Ketchel could hit hard for a middle, but Quarry took Frazier's best stuff from many rounds, so Ketchel's punchers chance here is not that good.

Not really since I'm referring to a far greater size difference. Quarry was 195 to 200 , giving up less than twenty pounds to Lyle and Shavers, possibly his largest wins ... no where close to fifty five pounds ...

you are talking 20 lbs of muscle against Lyle,Shavers and Mac Foster...these were muscular but fit guys not bit titted guys like Witherspoon, Tubbs, and Areola and Peter nor were they sterioded up like Shannon Briggs and others

Quarry was a little short of 6'ft and weighed under 200lbs and Lyle was 6'3+ same with Mac and other big men Quarry dominated...Shavers was not a giant 6" 209 but is mentioned on this board as the premier heavyweight puncher

Witherspoon and Tubbs, regardless of weight conditions, were much better than Peter and Areola ... anyway off point ... I see very few Ketchel takers , why ?

I see Ketchel being able to upset a few of the heavyweight contenders and has a shot to drop them as he did Johnson but punching alone or over powering them would not be the key skill and speed would be. Ketchel was not crude but power was his key at middleweight.

Some Heavyweights who are small guys have either great Heavyweight power or speed and or skill....Langford (who drew with Ketchel) Toney 5"9 but crafty, Marciano freakish power, Dempsey, a heavyweight puncher, even Tommy Burns was fast, had power and was tough. Fitz was a freak and a heavy puncher

I think Quarrys chin nulifys the best of punchers the way to beat him was skill, speed or an attrition battle and I do not see Ketchel have that in the Heavyweight division. This is not to say Ketchel could not KO bigger men, he would just not have the style to dominate.

Ketchels aggressive style, is his undoing in this one he dont make it past the 2nd round.

Well Shavers is the biggest 6 210 guy ive ever met or seen, met him in Person and he is still all muscle and very widein( in a muscular way) even in his Sr years.

Ketchel has a chance at that if he fights that fight but I think Ketchel style would be to bang with Jerry but Quarry was stopped I think once on a cut to Ali and really I dont think the cut was so bad just the fact Quarry was getting hit and the powers that be wanted a quick and safe Ali victory and Ali did enough to dominate

Ketchel must have been good, BUT he doesn't even impress me at all on the available films.
I think Johnson carried him, and the knockdown doesn't look genuine.
And the Ketchel-Papke fight I've seen just doesn't impress me.

Sorry guys I've been abroad for a couple of weeks but I'm back!

I'd like to add a little more color to this wonderful matchup:

    1) Stanley Ketchel, my favorite fighter of all time was a MW assassin with an aggressive style, animal power and a great chin(please forget about the Johnson fiasco) who had a total disregard for anyone or anything...including weight class. This means that he would not be intimidated by the size difference and if you take this( along with his ridiculous punching power) into consideration along with my next points you may see this fight as being a little closer than you may think...

    2) Jerry Quarry, another one of my favorite fighters, was a game but smallish HW who was a skilled counterpuncher and, at times, he let his "Irish" get the best of him and would tend to brawl when prompted. This means that , despite his prowess as a counterpuncher, he got hit and he got hit a lot. He was also prone, as a result, to getting cut and he was not a knockout puncher...

While Ketchel is seemingly tailor made for Quarry's counterpunching, I do believe that Quarry would get caught a few times(like he always did) in the opening rounds as Ketchel blitzes him from the opeining bell. The problem is that Quarry's got one of the best chins ever and if Shavers couldn't take him out with those shots, I don't think Ketchel would either. Quarry would eventually take control around the 4th or 5th round and the weight/size difference would then be a factor. Quarry wins this one probably 7-8 times out of 10 although I do belief Ketchel has a fair chance to take advantage of Jerry's Irish and cut him early and end it by the mid rounds somwhere by referee stoppage.:bbb

    Great thread!!!
