Had this ever happened in boxing before? Excluding fights being stopped due to cuts or injuries.

Not that I can recall for any high level fight. Closest one in recent memory was Keyshawn vs Jamaine Ortiz being stopped 13 seconds from the final bell, but that's different because Keyshawn had already dropped Ortiz previously, and was winning very wide and clearly already cruising to victory.

Whereas Usyk to any fair observer was down heavily on the cards and that 11th round was the first time he actually meaningfully hurt Rico, so stopping it literally on the bell is incompetent at best, and corrupt at worst.

The ref doesn’t keep a clock. He is there to make sure the fighters fallow the rule and prevent a fighter from serious harm.

Having said that, this ref was looking for an excuse to stop the fight.

Chavez vs Taylor was a buzzard beater. This time the bell actually range before the ref stepped in. One of the worst stoppage in history

This match was stopped after the bell rang. Never seen something like that before.

Chavez vs Taylor you can visibly see in Steele's face that he is extremely concerned for Taylor's health and he'd been beaten to a pulp round after round and one more punch can be the one to cause brain damage. He had taken that onslaught only for Steele to delete its meaning with a second remaining so that is the worst stoppage in history, despite his good intentions. Boxing is a brutal sport where it's a little out of the normal parameters of deciding when enough is enough. Also, it's probably Taylor's corner who were to blame as they distracted him when Steele asked if he was okay, so maybe we need to consider that in the decision.

In fairness to the referee, the time of the fight should not be taken into consideration when deciding if a fighter is unfit to continue fighting. If the referee makes that decision then they should stop the fight, not find an excuse to prolong it.

That being said, I, personally, was unhappy with this particular stoppage.

Dubois v Lerena also was waved off with punches landing after the bell, with the A-side in danger of losing

It's just boxing is a rigged game at the high end to protect interests. It was that Dubois v Lerena fight where I actually gave up caring about the division much anymore. The writing was on the wall with how things were going

Love Usyk, but let the man win or lose, don't protect him. He's 40, he's allowed to lose by now (not even saying he was going to, cards were very close). **** stoppage.

If he was he wouldn't have given Rico time to get his mouthguard when he was clearly out on his feet

Was trolling a bit but seriously now. Strange fight. I really don't think Rico did anything extraordinary except he had good stamina (but did get tired at the end), not getting sloppy and successfully leaning on Usyk like Fury wasn't able to. Shouldn't have been enough to trouble Usyk who is supposed to be a top ATG to that degree.

Usyk looked old or was overconfident in training, or it could have been that he seems to have real problems with head down pressure fighters. I thought he looked very uncomfortable vs Chisora like this. Maybe a combination of it all.
