The time could be right for Vic Darchinyan to switch to MMA after his loss to Yamanaka >>> VIC Darchinyan is being urged to make the switch to MMA after he was beaten by WBC world bantanweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka in Tokyo overnight. Despite looking strong in the middle rounds - and fighting with legendary trainer Johnny Lewis in his corner - Darchinyan was eventually beaten on points, with comprehensive 117-111 scorecards for the hometown hero. The Sydney fighter has hinted for some time that he would consider a switch to MMA, especially after the UFC recently created a new flyweight division. It's understood Strikeforce will also now push to sign him after suffering his second straight boxing defeat. Spurred by a large home crowd Yamanaka finished stronger than Darchinyan to reclaim his title after 12 rounds.
Won't happen. He'll be too small to fight at lightweight, their smallest division. Hell, he'd probably be small at 125lbs in the UFC. That would be a more viable option, but let's see him learn the ropes first and fight in TFP. While I think he could be in some potentially intriguing fights at a lower level, he's too old and has too much to learn I don't see him having any major success. At all. Still, if he gets the chance to stand and bang in 4oz gloves, class. Considering he's based in Australia, I'd recommend him immediately enrolling at Evolve in Singapore and get fed cans in One FC. If he's serious about UFC, TFP, but he'd have to accept such small change compared to what he's used to getting going the prospect route.
James Toney is a REAL muvafuhkaaar...none of this ***** ass rolling around **** he be ko.... Whoaaa major case of deja vu :nut
Darch' at least has some grappling experience. Maybe he can learn how to form the most basic of guards rather than laying flat on his back ;-)
i have no idea why Vic would bother. Surely he has made enough money and had a great career to hang them up.
ive always felt vic has the perfect punching style for mma. if he can get his wrestling going dont be surprised if he goes places in a hurry.
Sweet just get him learning some takedown defense and defensive jits and in 3-6months hell be ready to take on some top10-15 guys.
Granted Vic Darchinyan, if serious about MMA, will have his work cut out preparing for a new sport at 36. But apparently he already has a solid base in wrestling and it goes without saying he has knockout power in his hands. Kicking and blocking kicks would appear to be his biggest challenges. But he also seems to lack natural speed for a small guy - he's only 5ft 5 1/2 tall - and that won't be enhanced putting on 7 pounds to get up to the 125 pound MMA flyweight limit. Vic Darchinyan will certainly create a lot of interest if he does decide to take up the challenge.
