..Here we go. The Leonard thread has now become a "Duran is his daddy" thread. I didn't see this coming.
And of course Harry Greb, of who we have mountainous amounts of footage of. I think he was mentioned in the "Top 5 Combination Punchers Of All Time" thread.
I could never stand Leonard and thought he was a braggart and showboat. When this fight with Ranzany came up, I was hoping Pete would show him a thing or two or at least give him a tough fight. Pete was coming off his KO loss to Cuevas but was still highly regarded among insiders. This fight was just devastating. One senses that Leonard could have turned it on anytime he wanted and just preferred to play it cautious at first. The fight was fairly even through the first 3 rounds but all Leonard needed was one opening, in this case, that quick right hand and that was all she wrote. Ranzany was battered to be sure and the fight lasted way longer than it should have. I still dislike Leonard but have to give the man his due. An all time great for sure.
Not much love for most great modern fighters among the old timers. I don't see the real old-time fans on this forum waxing lyrical about Roy Jones or Manny Pacquiao either. Why should they?
Ray was a stone-cold killer. Now if Howard had that type of people that Ray had, at least he may had had a somewhat better career.
This a windup? I'll naively assume not and proceed to make a ***** of myself.... There's plenty of respect of Leonard amongst most old timers. A heck of a lot in fact from the ones with the right perspective. He's been revered the world over for years - rightfully so, even though I've never liked him much from a personal standpoint. Most of the old timers who are more the focus of attention on here get very little to no attention outside of forums such as these in comparison, whereas Ray is idolized. I don't see anything too wrong with that. Some people complain, for example, about others assuming that Hearns would get sparked in a lot of fantasy matchups against big punchers, conveniently ignoring that most of the big punchers who tend be favoured over him had the necessary toolsto implement their own power while negating any other advantages that Hearns might have. When people say that Monzon would have probably stopped him, it's not just because he was bigger and could punch. Leonard is a flat-out legend, but a lot of the flack that comes his way is sometimes warranted and is usually of lesser proportion than the rightful reverence accorded to him. Please don't tell me that you were being sarcastic or anything.....
