No, I mean old timers seem to actually dislike Leonard and have no quarrels about admitting it. Like one of the posts in this thread, saying he really disliked Leonard at the time and wanted to see Ranzany give him a pasting. I've really lost count the amount of times of heard people who were around at that time say similar things. I'm really not making this up, honest.

That's alway hard to watch. Pistol Pete was a good guy and he didn't deserve to take a beating that bad. The ref should have done his job.

I do believe you mate, but I just don't see how that's unique to Leonard at all. Many people thought Leonard was a *****, but I don't think there has ever been a fighter who was universally adored. Every fighter has a little niche of sceptics and/or haters. Many people disliked Ali's conduct outside the ring, many people pour scorn on Duran because of 'No Mas', many people want to see Mayweather get his mouth shut for him, etc etc etc... Yes, there are those who dislike Leonard, but I genuinely don't believe it is anything unique to him.

Between this fight and the Cuevas ko loss, I hope Ranzany still has some marbles today, and if he does, I hope he hangs on to them. Those were two hellacious ko losses.

Absolutely. All fighters will have their detractors, only it seems to be the respectable ones who dislike Ray Leonard. Boxing people, old timers, who were around as he was coming up through the ranks and really know the sport inside out. Those who are talking **** about the likes of Roberto Duran typically aren't hardcore boxing fans who were around during the 1980s. I'm wondering why he was resented by so many hardcore Boxing fans around at that time. Obviously the casual fan and the American audiences in general adored him, but the kind of guys who sign onto East Side Boxing every day to talk about Greb and Langford, not so much.

    Hey, I am new guy.

    Let me jump right in.

Watching this fight, I see a guy that has mastered his craft. He stood there, toe to toe shoulder-rolling, countering, and digging. Mayweather and Toney get tons of credit for this style, and they are very good at it, but watching Leonard do this against Ranzany, and against Mayweathers father was a eye-opener.

And Floyd JR thinks he could beat Leonard? He'd get a whuppin like his old man.

SRL is the most athletically gifted fighter I've ever seen.

Well there's allways Ali I suppose.

Theres a select group of fighters that i feel oldtimers and hardcore fans do not like. And i'm sorry to play this card old timers, but this is my opinion.

    The following fighters..
    Sugar Ray Leonard
    Mike Tyson
    Roy Jones Jr
    Floyd Mayweather Jr

...are disliked by the old timers because theyre outspoken, arrogant, cocky and black. Not like their favourite black, the mouth shut, humble Joe Louis that theyre used to.

....the hardcore knowledgable fans dislike them because their talent is apparent to a casual eye. And the expert always has to know better.

Stop stereotyping "oldtimers"..you should know better than that. If it weren't for these "oldtimers" you refer to, damn near nobody these days would be discussing those guys..this isn't exactly a "boxing friendly" age we're in now pal. Sports talking heads in the media would much rather prattle on about baseball, basketball, football, soccer stars rather than boxers...much less boxers of the past. What gets their attention mostly are the out of the ring antics of guys like Tyson and nowadays Mayweather...names like Leonard and Jones Jr. will continually be mentioned and talked about by the "oldtimers" long after the rather shallow sports media has forgotten about them.
