Sugar Ray Leonard vs Terry Norris

Prime Leonard beats prime Norris probably on points but could be a late rounds stoppage. Ray too good all round.

 

Agreed. He beat Kalule in ‘81 and fought Norris in ‘91. Ten years is an eternity of difference in boxing.

 

Leonard all day but Terry's speed and power would make it awkward at times. He'd stop him. He wouldn't be able to hang back and box lke he did after Simon Brown pole axed him, Leonard would be even sharper and if not he'd be better schooled.

He's got a great offense Terry, a really good bend of speed and power. If he had an iron chin he would have been special. He was an absolute piece of **** with regards to hitting people when they were down tho. SRL could have easily done a Santana on him and won that fight view DQ.

Picture this, it would be entirely possible, probable even, that you could take a good punch of Terry, take a knee then beat him by DQ if you were so inclined. The dimwit wouldn't be able to resist the temptation. God it was strange.

 

Norris had the worst self control I’ve ever seen. Not just the repeated hitting when his opponent was down. He could dominate a fight with just his speed and skills but for some reason he’d decide to stand flat footed and have a fire fight with a guy he could dominate if he just boxed. It nearly cost him a fight with Troy Waters, it did cost him a fight in the first Simon Brown match and it saw him nearly decapitated by Julian Jackson. He was reckless but conversely entertaining because of that.

 

Absolutely mate!!!!! Temperament and common sense were severely lacking.

 

I've always thought Norris was a bit overrated personally.

Don't get me wrong when Norris is in full flow he does look very good in regards to the eye test with his hand speed and boxing skills.

But if we're being honest Norris feasted on blown up Welterweights or fighters that were considerably past their prime.

Norris also has some serious flaws like his chin and temperament.

In my mind Leonard would stop him between 8-10 rounds in a good competitive fight.

 

Yes the opposite of how he was out of the ring. He always seemed measured and composed.

 

There’s plenty of people like that to be fair. In football codes they call it “White Line Fever”. Normally rational, sensible and composed people turn into complete headcases when they enter a sporting field, arena or boxing ring. It’s when the competitive instinct completely overtakes common sense.

 

Carlos Monzon was the complete opposite. So cold and calculating in the ring yet outside it was barroom brawls and family drama resulting in him killing his then girlfriend (I think another girlfriend shot him).

I think Leonard would destroy Norris (and I´m a fan).

He had no problems with boxers types, Benitez, Hearns and poor Andy Price (though he had outpointed reigning World champs Carlos Palomino and Pipino Cuevas) never got a title shot and is remembered for being destroyed in a round by Leonard.

Floyd Mayweather Snr puzzle was quickly solved too.

Norris was slightly bigger but his chin wasn´t.

1981 Leonard is all wrong for Norris who falls in 5.

Leonard was a glorious prize fighter at his best. He had it all. Mayweather has blazing handspeed himself but Leonard is more than willing to get in there and take a few swapping punches. He knew Mayweather couldn't overly hurt him so he was throwing caution to the wind and going all out on him. Brilliant and sustained.

No way is Norris beating prime Sugar Ray.

 

I like Norris and actually think he gets underrated these days, but 81 Leonard is KOing him.

The best I would think for Norris is he has some good moments before taking a canvas nap
