Sugar says Lewis is alltime great yet only top 12

Those two defeats were complete abberations, as proven by Lewis in the rematches. Those defeats would have never happened if Lewis was prepared as he should have been for those two guys. Lewis was capable of beating ANY heavyweight champion of history, even Ali. Lewis was capable of winning a tactical match against Ali. If Ken Norton, inferior in every department to Lewis, was able to trouble and defeat Ali, then Lewis certainly could.

As a man not all that much younger than Sugar, let me say that the body is often the last to die. Opinions die first and mummify and there is no way to change them--at least that happens with a lot of old men. It is a rare geezer who remains open to new viewpoints or evidence.

 

Aberrations don't happen twice.

Great fighters who have off nights rarely get knocked unconscious by B-level guys during their prime years. And never twice.

Lewis is therefore relegated outside of the elite of the HW champions. He is a great, yes. He is formidable head-to-head, yes.

But he does not belong up there with Ali or Louis. No way, no how('s your naps).

Similarly, Duran cannot ever be considered #1 p4p. No way, no mas.

Back to the original point of this thread, Sugar has only impressed me by his complete lack of originality. His stories are so tired and so often repeated by him and others that only the neophyte could find him remotely interesting.

H2H, I put a motivated Lewis at the top or very, very near it. And there is the problem, distracted by movie shoots or Jamaican beaches, he did not always prepare as he should have. And unfortunately, in an era of superstrong, giant heavies, under-preparation and distraction can be deadly.

Legacy-wise, I put him in the top-5. He beat a litany of very good, some great fighters, and a league of fighters who were stronger and more powerful than any other era previous.

 

I'm indian-candian for whatever its worth. I dont know why hispanics call themselves brown, i know a few of them and thier skin is pretty fair to me.

 

His legacy is horribly marred by bookend KO losses to B-level fighters...

 

I'd rate Lewis anywhere from around number 7 to 15 .

Top 12 ALL TIME is a high ranking.

Lewis is my #13, behind Ali, Louis, Foreman, Marciano, Frazier, Holmes, Dempsey, Jeffries, Johnson, Holyfield, Liston and Tyson.

 

I have him in my top 10. #12 is a respectable ranking, although a little too for Lewis. But respectable nonetheless. Sugar is no great historian but not as bad as some say

 

For a guy whose corny little act has given him unfettered access to one of the greatest hubs of the sport (NYC) the quality and originality of his work can only be considered abysmal.

In regards to Lewis, only by legacy can Jeffries, Johnson or even Dempsey be compared to him. Skill and talentwise, Lewis would destroy all in a matter of minutes. Guys who had a hard time with 160-170 pounders would have no skillset or reference with a monster like Lewis who had all the benefits of a long stint of amateur training followed by the cafeful, planned,corporate upbringing of his skills and experience (a trend started with Clay). Given these and other advantages modern sport offered him, there really can be no comparison.
