I doubt that. Kilrain was announced as the champ of the Police Gazette long before his bout with Sullivan. Him and Sullivan trained for a long time, for their fight.
I have only seen two pictures from this fight, both previously listed. I've seriously had one of those truly shitty days you only get perhaps a dozen times in your life. If someone has copies of more pictures from this fight and can post them, it would be a small but significant distraction/favor.
Google!!! Sullivan Kilrain fight pics.... there's about 10 from the scene of the 'fight'... mostly taken from bad angles, then again.. I dont think Sullivan had a 'good' angle from a photographers perspective on the day.... fat *****..lol.
I dont see where Sullivan was a 'fat *****'. Before coming into the Kilrain bout, yes, this is a fact that he was grossly out of shape. Thank God for Muldoon to help Sullivan drop the bottle long enough to pull out what was probably the best performance of his career under London Prize Ring Rules. Sullivan said to Kilrain during the fight to 'fight like a man', because Kilrain was more a wrestler than anything else, and at one point dropped a knee square on the face of Kilrain after Sullivan managed to get him down, to get the point across. Sullivan drank whiskey inbetween rounds and after throwing up, he was asked if he could continue fighting, and his reply was: "I could fight til tomorrow if necessary!"....at the start of the 76th round, Kilrain came out as if his neck were broken, as his head was just hanging down, his corner threw in the hat and the fight was declared over. After the fight, though, Sullivan dismissed Muldoon's training methods and the two never were on good terms again. After Sullivan lost the title, he planned a comeback and a fight between sullivan and Fitzsimmons was scheduled. Sullivan begged Muldoon to train him again, and Muldoon told him to **** off. When Sullivan and Fitzsimmons met to square off, the bout was broken up by police and never took off. In his later years, while doing lectures on the evils of alcohol, Sullivan warmly remembered Muldoon and would tell tales of how Muldoon would wrestle him to the ground, threaten him with a baseball bat, etc when The Boston Strong Boy tried to escape camp to get drunk.
In the Fitz Fight, Corbett was in great shape. Take a look at the rematch of Jeff, and Corbett is not in top shape. He had a belly.
What year was the Sullivan Fitz proposed fight? I have to say that it is hard to fathom some of the fights the police broke up, or the times forced to be exhibition only. It is such a shame. Imagine if police stopped ali frazier! Poor old John L almost seems to have been stopped from fighting more times than he fought! I get the feeling that officialdom was not all that fondof the man.
There is a photo on the ring's top 100 punchers. Its a side shot, yep Corbett is in a thong, Which brings me to other point, how many of Corbett's fights are in thongs?? If you see drawings of the period, the Corbett Fitz fight, both are in shorts, but the film CLEARLY shows Corbett in a thong. Did Corbett beat Sullivan in a thong?? Fought Jackson to a draw in a thong?? The drawings of couse has Corbetts in shorts, but like the Fitz's fight, you never know.
HH.. the 'fat *****' jibe is not a slag off. basically reflective of his photographic 'conditioning'..
Take into account that any 'losing' fighter could have a handful of friends in the crowd, who'd happily create a bit of noise and force the cops to stop the fight via thier own uncontrolled actions.
Fights among the crowds were common in bare knuckle or early gloved bouts. Still to this day, among travellers or even in unlicensed events, fights will break out between groups. Sometimes it was every man for himself, the fighters fighting off the crowd, etc.
