It's personal opinion, or 'the eye test'

Based on accomplishments, Sven would obviously rate higher. But on a head to head basis, he wouldn't.

If someone asked me to name the best SMW of all time, I'd have to pick Roy. Because when he was 25/26, he looked just about unbeatable to me. I think he was simply a better fighter than anybody else who's ever fought at the weight. To me, he was clearly on another level to Sven. So again, he'd be rated higher.

saying "this fighter did more at this weight" compared to someone who far outstripped him in several divisions is the same mistake as only looking at a fighters resume wins and ignoring their losses, or focusing on part of their resume - you cant focus on part of a real resume to appraise a fighter's career as a whole! you need to appraise their whole active (non-hot) resume to judge their accomplishments.

I dont waste much time with Herol as he ducks out of sensible debates.
At SMW the WBO is of no less value, but I understand how in other divisions it was or could have been, but at SMW it is of no less value as it is just as old and at that time had overall the better champs and defences. Not sure what you think is backing down or changing opinion?

So accomplishments you do rate Sven higher, so why did it take you so long to say that?
As for how someone looked, that can be debateable and be based on opposition.
Look at how say D Curry had looked so good, or even recently some felt Andre Dirrell.
Heres another, look at how good Degale looked before he and Groves fought and how Groves had been put down and nearly stopped whilst Degale toyed with P Smith. Degale was a massive favourite going into that one with how he looked. I was one of the few that picked for Groves but not in the way he did win. then looked at what happened

I wont waste much time on this post with Herol being arguably ESBs most irrelevant poster and being a poster who has posted about fights and fighters they had not seen, but your arguement is pathetic when you look at a fighter like Rocchigiani who was a good undefeated SMW and world champ (relinquished) until he met C Eubank who outboxed him.
that showed Rocch was a level below at SMW, but then Rocch went up and looked unfortunate to many in his first fights with undefeated LHW champs Maske, and Michalczewski who were excellent LHW champs and HOFers/greats.
Enough time wasted on ESBs worst poster :patsch

how convenient that you decided that I am that, saves you having to ever reply to arguments you realise you cant win.

and finally to your point -
    - this argument makes no sense as a counterargument. You appear to be replying to someone elses post. At least you added some self-irony to your "irrelevance" claims. Its nice you try at least to amuse everyone, that's one thing you've not failed in.

It doesn't matter that the SMW was a new division in the 80's. The WBA and the WBC belts were more prestigious than the IBF and the WBO, because of their history.

The WBO is now recognised as a main belt. But it wasn't in the 80's or the 90's. It wasn't respected back then. At times, the WBO were heavily criticised for how their rankings and mandatory defences were carried out. Again, The Ring magazine didn't even recognize or respect them, and neither did respected boxing writers such as Thomas Hauser.

    It didn't take long.

I don't believe Sven had a better win at the weight than what Roy did against Toney, and I think that Roy's wins over Malinga and Lucas are on a level with any of Sven's best wins. But of course, 34 fights is a lot more than 7/8.

I take your points on board regarding De Gale and Groves, but Roy consistently looked better than Sven against top ten ranked guys. In my opinion, Roy was completely on another level.

Let's say that Joe only had 7/8 SMW fights. Pick out any you want. If I'd have watched 7/8 of Joe's fights and all 34 of Sven's, I'd rate Joe higher without a doubt.

He just had paid off judges and referees. Never in my life would I think I would see a ref warn a boxer for punching their opponent in the face but that's exactly what I saw happen when Reid suffered the mother of all robberies in Deutschland.
