LL had a rematch clause in the contract with Rahim , so he got his immediate rematch. there was not a second rematch clause in the original contract . Basics here, basics
And what does this have anything to do with the fact Lewis ducked a rematch with both Mercer and Vitali?
Ducked lol. After Mercer Lewis got himself a title shot v McCall. Why would he fight Mercer again instead of fighting for the WBC title? No rematch required v Vitali. Lewis already smashed his face in.
Why would he fight Mercer again? Because it was a very close fight in which a lot of people had Lewis losing. Mercer chased the rematch, Lewis Didn't Want To Know. As for Vitali Lewis was wobbled, out boxed and losing before the fight was stopped. Lewis agreed to the rematch as a rematch after a tight like that would have been the correct thing to do.
It doesn't matter if it was close. Lewis won and then went onto to bigger things such as winning a world title. As for the Vitali fight, a guy winning a fight over 6 rounds in a 12 round contest means nothing. I find it very bizarre that Vitali fans seem to treat being up on the cards 6 rounds in as a victory. The ending was conclusive, Vitali was in no position to continue after getting his face pummelled.
Who said I was a Vitali fan? The fact that after the fight it was Vitali getting all the cheers speaks volumes. After Mercer, Lewis was out of the ring for 9 months, there was plenty of time for a rematch if he truly wanted.
I kinda agree with you re: Vitali, who would have won that fight had he not been so badly cut, and while Lewis can take credit for opening it up, I think he knew deep down, aged 37, his time was up and he'd have probably lost a rematch based on what happened in those six rounds. But I don't criticise him for that nor should he have any reason to be ashamed that, at the tail end of his career, he was struggling to match-up to Vitali, who was a helluva boxer, as we know. Great champions have the right to end their career before a younger fighter and old father time catches up with them. They don't have to hang around for a loss to justify their legacy. In fact, often the very same people who call out fighters for retiring in the face of a younger threat are the ones who taint a boxer's legacy if they do hang around for one fight too many and lose.
Don't think there was anything spurious about the Vitali fight. Lennox was in the worst shape of his career and still grinded out a win. If he bounced himself back into shape for the rematch, he would have won even more convincingly. If he thought he couldn't do that, it was completely justifiable for him to retire. No athlete should keep on fighting if he can't train himself down to an optimal weight. Vitali fans should just deal with the loss and be thankful the fight hadn't happened earlier, because then there would have been no controversy about the verdict and Vitali would be eating through a straw to this day.
There are lots of people who think that fight shouldn't have been stopped and that as champ Lewis should have been given more of a chance to come back into it.
