He was taking all kinds of hits from Reggie Gross, and Tyson knocked him out.

Tyson had tons of courage. Even in losses, he hung in tough. Look at Buster Douglas fight.

Being weak mentally also means letting other maniuplate you as well-Don King,Robin Givens etc.

Teddy says some good things and bad things depending on what he is talking about and if he is letting his own ego/bias in the way.

What I am not in favor of about this story is that Teddy likes to tell the story over and over and gets wet between the legs when telling it like he is a big deal for doing it. And it increases with his own story of how he wanted to kill his own fighter (with a gun) years later.

To me, that diminishes the possibility of doing it for this reason: To put Tyson in a position of vulnerability like he did to that girl by touching her ass without permission.

I do however agree that Tyson may have been better taught by taking away his gym privileges while being reminded that boxing is a great opportunity at doing something positive in his life while going back to Brownsville will more than likely lead you back to jail.

But I wasn't there and I don't know Tyson that well so I don't know the details. Sometimes kids can be taught this lesson by taking something away but then what if that kid actually needs to stay in school, in this case, the Gym...under the guidance of Mentors?
Different cases for different people. D'Amato knew this and pretty sure he said this.
So if this was the case, thinking that Tyson would end up in jail or dead if back in Brownsville, then maybe keeping an eye on him first-hand and keeping him active was better. However, he didn't exactly learn his lesson long term by his self-admittance that he treated women poorly...something he said he got growing up seeing his Mother treated like ****.

Robin and her Mother were said to have done the same thing in order to make him sound crazy. Instead of Tyson losing control of the car because he was speeding and a poor driver...Tyson tried to commit suicide. :patsch

Atlas makes some valid points, but suggesting Tyson always folded in the ring when faced with resistance is not only wrong, but stupid.

Tyson himself said Cus did his best for the time he had with him. Everything was crammed and things left out because there was limited time. But overall, he did say Cus taught him great life lessons on what to do, how to act what will happen if he does this or that, etc. But he {Tyson} did not always listen.

I think he even said Cus once told him you are the type of person that needs to be hurt in order to learn.

Even on the Piers Morgan show, Tyson talked about how he once talked to a Women the wrong way and D'Amato let him have it.

But try to watch before that because he talks about D'Amato

True, but most are manipulated in some capacity...especially those that don't have a constant positive present that has your best interests. D'Amato, and then maybe Jacobs, was who he felt were the last two. It was Jacobs who he said would come and talk to him and ask him if he needed anything while guys like Cayton didn't. King did.
At such a young age and in his position, I would say most would have fell.

    Women manipulate many men.

Even Ali went with the NOI

My problem with Tyson going with King was that he should have known King was bad presence.
And not only did he screw up once, he screwed up again post-prison by going back with him.

But mentally weak and Tyson....?...I think its more of having holes that were never quite filled that take him off course. Because if he was completely mentally weak, no way does he become a Pro fighter and even last as long as he did. Talent can only take you so far.

Might have to agree with this:

    BoxingInsider: Memory of Mike Tyson?

Jake Lamotta: “He’s not such a bright boy. He makes a lot of mistakes. He does stupid things. He could have gone down as one of the greats of all time. But he blew it.”

Just picked this from an interview I just posted:

Cus and company covered up alot of things for Tyson BEFORE he even turned pro.Not enough time? They had Tyson for YEARS and chose to focus 100% on just boxing and not life lessons and it came back to bite Tyson in the ass.

you can't be mentally weak and unify the titles, that's just a ridiculous statement

Exactly. Atlas is a bitter old man holding on to the past. Look what happened to Tyson outside of the ring, he could of gave up along time ago but he didn't that is true courage.

What was the better situation for him: Catskill or Brownsville?

they covered some things up but we are also talking about a convicted criminal with a huge rap sheet by the time he was 12. I mean, some really crazy **** he did and thought before he arrived to Catskill.

Remind me how many of these kids turn their lives around?

read this link below and tell me how correctable this is going to be when it is ingrained from childhood.

Who would have done better, Teddy Atlas?
Same guy who decided to hold a gun to a 15 year old's head. And years later wanted to kill one of his fighters for firing him.

Tyson doesn't blame D'Amato. He learned enough from him but if I can remember correctly from one of the interviews not to long ago, it basically came down to D'Amato doing what was necessary to build him up in such a short period of time.

D'Amato was actually proud most of Torres and what he did after boxing. Same with Patterson and what he did after boxing and the positions they held.

Tyson was the one that screwed up. Tyson was the one that reverted back.

It was even mentioned before that D'Amato actually had Tyson go to a hypnotists and/or therapy to get him right mentally.

Patterson, Torres, Rooney and even Tyson himself, all say that D'Amato didn't have enough time to finish the product.

The tools he learned in boxing aren't just tools to win inside the ring, but in Life. Tyson says this.

He also talked about how the ultimate goal of D'Amato, and D'Amato has that quote, was to be "Independent" of him {D'Amato}. To be a Man and stand on your own.

Right.Cus taught Mike boxing and that was all. When you see a young person start to do things that are wrong you at least TRY to correct that behaviour being that YOUR the parental figure.

Do you have any idea how many times they covered for Mike BEFORE he won the title? If not for paying people off Mike would have been in trouble WELL before he won the title.

Cus wasnt finished with Mike?Christ how many years do you need to teach someone the simple basics of right and wrong?

All Teddy ever said was Cus was only interested in Tyson as a boxer and not interested in other aspects of Mikes life. And you know what?Teddy was exactly right-look what ended up happening to Mike.

Kevin Rooney? If you ever met him youd know how full of **** he is and you think Teddy is an ******* I wish youd meet Rooney.

Steve Lott? what has he done since Tyson.NOTHING.

Tyson said it, others did too. Atlas wa sonly with Cus a while as trainer, less than 2 years, and thought he could take Tyson.
