That tough childhood thing is used as an excuse for Mike far too often. There are many fighters who had it far worse off than Mike, and they are good people. It is true that Tyson made something of his life, but he's pissed it all away multiple times. Just 3 years ago he was arrested for drunk driving and having drugs on him. He isn't as wild as he used to be, but the man is still no good.
That may be true, but theirs also alot other fighters who did have it rough and once there respective career was over or down-slide they reverted back to drugs and violence. As far as Mike goes, he aint the best guy in the world, but who really is? Tyson just looks bad because thats what sells in America, the average fan wants to be shocked in some way, and Tyson rarely let you down when it came to that. I believe the **** he pulled during his career was mostly an act, telling Lewis "I'm going to eat your children" and other rants, all it did was make sure that the clips were shown on ESPN the next day over and over again. He knows what gets people's attention and what makes money, his PPV sales are 3rd most of any other fighter only Holyfield, who just passed him in sales after his Iggy fight 2 years ago and DLH are ahead of him.
I agree a lot of the comments he made were just to keep people watching, but a lot of the stunts he pulled away from the media I think he truly did because he isn't a very good person. Beating Robin Givens is just wrong. I know in the long run she had it comming, but he beat her before she deserved it.
I have a question for you guys... When Teddy Atlas refused to allow Michael Moorer to drink water between rounds (as punishment)...do you guys justify it? I only saw a clip so I am not aware of the context behind it. If Moorer was doing something strongly against the trainer's advice and Atlas wanted to justifiably enforce himself for Moorer's good...I can understand. Otherwise I hope Atlas wasn't trying to hear himself and how off again.
I dont think he's the monster the media portrays him as. As far as Givens goes, the women ****ed over Mike on live television, I believe it was on the Barbra Walters show. What she said about Mike was awful, wether it was true or not, he's was the one that put you and your gold digging mother in a nice house and gave you both the nicer things in life, and thats how you repay him? I'm sure Tyson wasn't the easiest to get along with, but what you see is what you get. In and out of the ring he was animal at times, but you were the one that decided to marry him, for better or for worse. I remember reading Tyson said to Jose Torres, "The best punch I ever threw was a backhand, she hit every ****ing wall in the room", he was obviously talking about Robin Givens.
Anyone who rates Tyson a good person has serious issues themselves. Sure he acheived plenty in the ring. But outside it his entire life from start to present was just one big screw-up. Depending on how much is true of what we read of Atlas he may well have been a good person, with strong ethics etc. Can't imagine he would rate any way similar to Tyson anyway. At least I hope not!
Lots of people had it rough as a child ,that doesnt give them a pass to molest an 11 year old girl ,mug people, abuse women and **** someone, nor bite a mans ear off and intentionally try and break anothers arm.Yes Tyson made something of himself ,then he reverted to what he has allways been a first class arsehole.Tyson has had more that enough opportunities to redeem himself but allways fell down on the job eventually.
Have to disagree there. Having read about his life before D'amato in a couple of different books I'll tell you he was heading for a life sentence, boxing saved him from that. He is angry at the world, always has been, old age might chill him out.
he also had learning difficulties i believe but imagine that and he was alone with his brother when he found out
Teddy Atlas is a self serving punk who should be paying Tyson a percentage of his earnings for life because nobody would even know who Atlas was without Tyson. And the story above is a very over inflated story of what happened. Tyson was no more than 15 when that happened. He didnt force himself sexually on Atlas' step-sister, he grabbed her ass, period. And she wasnt 11 she was 13, a different of 2 years. I dont know about you but I was playing grabass at 15 as well and certainly didnt expect to have a gun put to my head for it. Furthermore, Atlas didnt just up and leave after that like he was some high principled, holier than thou individual. He was fired flat by Cus and told to leave. He, to this day, never forgave Cus and never forgave Rooney, who was his friend up until then. Now keep in mind that this is the same Atlas who has knife scar down his cheek, has tried to attack George Foreman during a press conference, states in his book that he took a gun and went to Donnie LaLondes apartment to murder him, attacked Kirk Johnson in training camp and Johnson's conditioning coach, attacked another former fighter of his who was a featherweight (cant remember his name), etc etc. So you tell me, is Teddy Atlas a moral guy or just loose cannon piece of ****. I subscribe to the latter opinion. As an addendum, its funny to me that Atlas is always considered an expert on Tyson and called "Tyson's former trainer" when anyone does a special on Tyson despite the fact that he worked with Tyson part time for only two and a half years of Tyson's AMATEUR career during what would be an over twenty year association with boxing for Tyson. Jay Bright worked with Tyson longer than Teddy Atlas ever did for god sakes.
I have also made this point when people blame Tyson's lack of discipline & excuse his poor in ring showings on the death of Cus. According to Atlas on, "Beyond The Glory",(FoxSports documentary) I believe Atlas accused Cus of spoiling Tyson & not being a overbearing disciplinarian. Maybe Atlas is exaggerating/bitter ,but I wouldn't doubt that Cus doted over his future heavyweight champion & the Cus death excuse seems to be a little thin one for Tyson.
What a stupid thing to do. Foreman would kick his ass. Any details on this? I bet he was held back by one pinky. :rofl well in fairness atlas is an expert on tyson. he was with tyson during a very important stage of tyson's life & career.
i agree somewhat. however, tyson badly needed a competent corner against douglas. he could have used some guidance or strategy when grossly outboxed by douglas & holyfield. cus would have been the best man for that. tyson was always fragile and dependent on others. i mean that's too bad for him but it'd be interesting to see if tyson would be a more strategic fighter if cus was around.
A gun for Donny Lalonde & Mike Tyson:huh A lot of gunplay for a man whom I just heard on ESPN radio(3/9/09) "The Brian Kinney Show" called out young punks/thugs who reverted to guns to settle disputes. I still like listenening to the guy though.
He openly admits he had a lot of problems and was a dick. He might not be the best person, but he tries to be the best of his abilities.
