Mate I played Flegg and Premier league myself and earned more then most 20s/Prems players do now..because times have changed..now they give you a few Gran, and pay all your Uni/Tafe fees and set you up in that regard. In our day mate, most blokes still worked a few shifts made 10-30k from lower grades and that was that, none of this education stuff..its different eras.I know a few blokes playing Nsw Cup now earning a few hundred a game,it all depends.I think Willis has a lot more of a chance to make it big in boxing then league IMO No doubt, you play Aus Schoolboys 90% either play Nrl,or get very close to doing so.
Yeah I see your point. I want Meehan to choose boxing but I doubt he will but time will tell I guess mate.
Mundine is a great example..Its whats possible.. Garth wood is another example,he has made a lot more in his short boxing career then in his short Nrl career... Sol is a bad example,he fights very inactive and the less you fight the less $$ Hoppa, well he is doing all sorts of combat sports these days,I watched a 17yr old (also was a former Aus Schoolboy and play 20s with Roosters at this young age) Ko Hoppa a few months back..that young fella chose mma over a Footy career with more promise then Willis...Horses for Courses Bud
anthony was a one off. he was a huge public name who made headlines for tying up his shoelaces. plus he had been training in the boxing gyms since he was in nappies. garth woods earnings were a bit of a fluke. without the contender, he would have made nothing. sol would have made little as he faced nobody who helped sell tickets and yeah, too inactive. hoppa likely made some reasonable cash, but not huge amounts i doubt it. u need to be elite and/or be a headline maker as a young boxer or it will be a big struggle imo.
A guy like Mundine comes around once every 50 yrs..... You won't see that happen again anytime soon as far as promoting fights and publicity. Can you believe every one of Mundines fights have been PPV.... That's gotta be some sort of record. That will never happen again. Garth Wood got lucky because Mundine was in the picture promoting the contender series.
Meehan would benefit from the experience of elite training, coaches, facilities, environment that RL offers. Also there is a safety net with a contract that covers injury/education. He has a real chance to be exposed to to notch sports management and marketing. Mundine would've been a different story if he had only a boxing following/promoter and no ready made market. I heard it was a record too (all ppv fights) and you couldn't land a fight with Ottke after 9 fights without a substantial carrot. Alternatively had Choc stayed in league, one knee Reco and you can become irrelevant real quick in a team sport.
Choc had a big brain - unfortunately it parted company with him when it saw the writing on the wall and has moved on to Sonny Bill
It also depends on how good you are ofcause..I remember Jeff Fenech stopped boxing, played a few lower grade games for Parramatta I think it was? and didn't crack it and went back to boxing...I agree with Mundine, thats a very rare case but my point was he has done it,and Hoppa had a better career in nrl ( played more rep games etc had more publicity) but not so in boxing. If your good enough it can happen ( as it is with anything in life)
joe williams is another case of X-leagues player turned boxer who earns fuk all basically fighting on crappy country cards
