Sprints are neccessary too. And boxing is anarobic as well as aerobic. And the anerobic part of boxing is even more reasons to jog and jog far and sprint while your jogging. When you go serious rounds 8 plus rounds, whether it just be intense sparring or a fight your areobic work it far excedes that of just a 3-5 mile run. Jogging an easy 3 miles is no where near going to get you in shape to go 10 rounds with someone who can take you to your limits. A 3 minute round with someone who can push you like that is the equivelnt to a 3 minute intense jog sprinting about every 10 seconds or so. 10 rounds times 3 minutes is 30 minutes which would be around 40 or 5 miles. And considering when your just jogging your very relaxed you better run the extra few miles to make up for it. That a mandatory 5-7 miles AT LEAST........ And its not just during certain parts of camps. Maybe it is for a fighter thats not gonna reach his potential who stays outta shape unless hes in camp. Fighters like Ali and Floyd stay in shape year round, all the greatest fighters stayed in shape year round. Boys like this are ready to be pushed to there limit for 12 rounds everyday of there lives. And trust me I can run 20 miles everyday if I wanted. Running is what seperates the men from the boys sun.
There both required for boxing my friend (jog and sprint). When your goin at it with someone you dont just go at it as hard as you can for a few seconds then just stop and take a break. You need to build your areobic endurance to so you can keep up a decent pace even when your not "sprinting" in or out of the ring.
You're not saying much we haven't heard before. I don't think we are disagreeing in the sense that road work is a necessity. But your misplaced advise is where we're disagreeing. You are generalizing too much, making assumptions with absolute ideals.
Im just tryin to give everyone a pep talk lol, besides it seems there are a few people on here who havnt heard this before. If there is a fighter who only has to worry about 3 1 min rounds or 4 3 min rounds and has no desire to reach thier fullest potential has a fighter who can push themsleves to the limit for 10-12 rounds then by all means slack off when it it comes to roadwork.
Repeat sprints build up aerobic endurance far more effectively than long runs do. The more sprints you do in a session the more you're using your aerobic energy system, the intensity improves your VO2 and blood lactate tolerance instead of just peripheral adaptations that you get from long runs.
Running, the problem we have is, the Floor, it moves us. Causing Impact, more energy used, more Stress on Joints and CNS, Injuries. Cure, to work anaerobically for 30 minutes, where you move the Floor, not the Floor moving you, thats the answer.
you say your trying to improve your fitness so you dont gas in the third round of sparring? Ive only been training a few months and my fitness was awful. What I have been doing almost daily at home are exercises, working for 3 mins, rest for one. They are body weight exercises and you can mix it up. I do 6 different ones for 30 secs each, making the 3 mins. so my rounds may look like this 1.press ups 2.sit ups 3 burpees 4.jumping jacks 5.dorset raise 6.squat jumps rest for one min and repeat. I used to find it a real struggle to do 3 when starting out. now I push myself to 9,10 rounds of circuits. My stamina has vastly improved. Now when im in the boxing club I feel 100% better than when I first walked through the doors a few months back. im not saying this is a decent replacement for running and the pros and cons etc. Im just saying this helped my fitness which you stated you wanted to work on.
I dont care what anyone says, if someone wants to go 6+ plus 3 min rounds hard you have to do some good cardio like running some miles. You have to simulate what your body will be going through inside the ring and running a a 100 meter sprint then taking a break for a few isnt it. Jogging at a nice hard pace and sprinting about every 20 second does. But back on topic, a exercise that could kinda simulate running is getting on a bike and doing some trail riding. Or at least a road with alot of hills.
And let me clarify running 10 miles every day may have been a bit of an exageration {unless you seriously have a 12 rounder coming up with a good pro} but lets make no mistake roadwork is where its at.
Skipping, swimmming, cycling or any exercise really that elevates your heart rate for a prolonged period.
On topic, I hate running too, but mainly because I run with inadequate footwear. Could someone please recommend me a good (but affordable) pair of running shoes?
Running sucks so much its not even funny. Wolves howl, babies cry and somewhere a star goes out every time somebody does roadwork. Those who insist that running is a must and cant be avoided or replaced as an excersise, GTFO and may Gawd have mercy on your poor souls. ***gots Thanks for the other recommendations, though
