From the ref cam you could see he was nowhere near as bad as the first KD. In that condition he should have been given the opportunity to continue. The condition of a fighter is what a ref judges a stoppage on, not what "might" happen should he let the fight continue. If what might happen came into it Bayless should have called it off immediately and not given the standing 8 in the first place.
It's not like he didn't get a chance to continue and try to change the momentum of the fight, because he did get those extra chances. The fact is he couldn't change the momentum, Garcia was not punching himself out and tiring, fight over. It's like some of RJJ's old fights where even though the opponent was not flat on his back, he posed absolutely no threat and was clearly out of the fight. We also didn't hear Khan's speach that well, for all we know he sounded really punchy and the ref made the call. I thought Juanma was stopped early in the first Salido fight, but I do not rank this bout up there in terms of bad stoppages, this one was ok as far as I'm concerned.
The first punch looked like it broke his neck and when bayless stopped it khans legs were still wobbly.
The camera they had on Bayless showed me he made the right call. Hell, he could have stopped it after the first KD, as slow as Kahn was to respond but he let him go. Bayless did a great job with that fight, Kahn never did recover from the first KD.
The first shot, had it landed perhaps 2 inches distally, on the end of his chin - would have probably had him on a stretcher straight to the hospital ER room. Hes lucky that shot landed through his neck as there was minimal torque production to whiplash his brain into mush. That shot had so much power on it, it was ridiculous.
Well said. The driving force in concussions is the whiplash from chin to brain where the brain literally slaps from the front to the back of the skull. This punch was absorbed by the neck muscles plus it prevents the whipping effect of the head snapping on the neck. KHAN GOT KTFO!
He had already eaten a lot of heavy shots. TBH the one that put him down the final time wasn't even all that flush, but Khan's legs were done. He was done. It is exactly the ref's job to protect a fighter from immediate danger going forward. It is undoubtedly his most crucial responsibility. And in Bayless' snap judgement, Khan was at immediate risk of getting hurt. Do you disagree?
I wasn't crazy about the stoppage either, this is professional boxing after all. But what bothered me more was the long counts being given by the ref. Give the 8 count, if the fighter gets up either stop it or motion for it to continue, this dude was literally playing 20 questions with Khan, and that is not fair to the fighter scoring the knockdown. As far as the stoppage, Khan looked ready to continue to me, this was a championship fight after all, not a 4 round prelim. Sometimes I think these refs think we are tuning in to see them make their big, dramatic wave-offs
I initially thought the final knock down resulted from a glancing blow but truth be told after re-watching it I think it was a hard shot on his temple and given he was already concussed it was enough to drop him, obviously.
NO! he was minutes or seconds away from a serious head injury! Ref was 100% right. Should have stopped it in the 3rd - all this long count nonsense!
Why give the standing 8 count then? Why stop the fight when the fighter is in better condition than a previous KD where the fight was allowed to continue? Makes no sense to me.
the guy was drunk slowly nodding his head to say yes in the replays it looked like he nearly got his neck broken and at one point he was doing laps round the ring running for the hills!! I aint the biggest Khan fan but I dont have any desire to see him get brain damaged or worse..... good stoppage!!
Why give the standing 8? Because he was giving him a chance. I don't think the ref was somparing the KD's when making his call. But He had been taking plenty of punishment. Khan didn't show him enough, in his judgement, to continue. In light of the prior KDs, the fact that his legs were gone, the bombs he had been eating, as well as the one's that were en route to his head, waving it off was wise.
Stupid thread! KHAN already out of it in the first KD, he was given a chance since he is a champ as well and it's almost the end of the round. That was a good stoppage for me! the only thing I hate about that stoppage is because a fantastic fight has ended. We have to be unselfish and just think about what we wanted to see if KHAN was given a chance to continue in the 5th,.
