In fairness to the referee, Jon was barely landing and, whenever he did, he was getting punished back. He wasn't eating light shots, Murray was beating him up. It was alarming how often his legs were stiffening. It wasn't like Jon had been dominating the fight, got clipped and got stopped unfairly. He'd won one round and was getting bashed up systematically by Murray, who was careful and methodical and vicious. Ok, it was a shame, but I don't want to see someone go out on a stretcher because of stupid pride.
:good In truth it looked like Jono was getting broken down but he could have recovered well and come back strong
Warren kept Khan well away from from Thaxton(or anyone decent) its sad to see him retire I really enjoyed watching him over the years but it looks the right choice.Try and catch his fight v Hatton he gave him a good scrap.
Sadly, this is long overdue. That is no slight on Jono, retirement is just something that many fighters with a winning mentality, like Thaxton, just can't force themselves to do. I can honestly say that Thaxton has been one of my favourite British boxers ever since I've been watching boxing. He never got the breaks he deserved and bad luck always hit him at the most unfortunate of times. He has been a incredible servant to British boxing and will be missed. Enjoy your retirement, Jono:good.
Pity ITV are dropping the boxing he came accross really well & seemed a natural in front of the camera.
No, but i know a man who has the Thaxton-Burton fight... I doubt anyone would want to see that one though. Damn shame he had to retire on a robbery like that though, but already all the ESB roadsweepers are sweep sweeping the manner of Murrays victory under the carpet as he still has that big shiny 0 for everyone to hold onto... ESB brit forum has one almighty big carpet. Lifting it would give me an asthma attack
Same thing I want. I am sure in that '15 years of Sky boxing' promo thing they were showing a couple of weeks ago that the knockout punch was shown very briefly - thats not enough though!
A great servant and a cracking career from one of our most exciting champions. Shared the ring with some truly great opponents. Wish him all the best and hope he stays involved with the sport in one capacity or another.
Great fighter, great career, seems like a genuinely top bloke, great servant to the sport - great example for young kids. All the best in the future
it wasn't a great stoppage, but to risk being a patronising twat, perhaps it was better for him to go out like that. murray hadn't even started sitting down on his punches yet - something no one has mentioned yet. and believe me, he would have. thaxton could have taken atrocious beatings from both romanov and murray, but was prevented for different reasons (bad cuts, panicked ref). what an excellent warrior thaxton has been. just look at the ppl he's fought: murray, romanov, melero, hatton, magee, mezaache, scrap iron ryan, hollington, meager, stewart, lawton, dynamo dunne, rowland, augustus. lot of setbacks, lot of hard luck, but this makes his triumphs - especially W12 meager and KO3 melero - all the more remarkable. this guy has really gone for it, given himself the best chance of success, never been matched carefully (only fight that was put off being murray) like so many prima donnas, and i wonder if we will ever have such an intense and honest pro on the domestic scene again?
