Yep. A big argument about who has the best chance of winning can be made for both. Both can be very good and also pretty poor. I think it will all depend which fighter comes in better on the night and not that one is naturally better than the other. I am really looking forward to this fight and a damm sight more than Khans fight. Both Romanov and Thaxton win or lose will come out of the fight with a great deal of credit, just for making the fight happen. I can not see Khan getting any credit for his dismal win over the Dane.
Anyone advise me on the best way to travel to this venue? I'm coming from just down the road (Lakeside Essex) and was wondering if its best to come by car (is there good parking there?) or by train? Thanks in advance.
York Hall is right by Bethnal Green tube station, which is on the central line, (one stop from Liverpool Street). I believe trains from where you are will come into Fenchurch Street, which is close to Liverpool Street. You could drive to somewhere on the central line, then tube it in, but I wouldn't bother driving all the way in though.
from setanta.com.... Frank Warren has launched a blistering verbal assault on Jonathan Thaxton for allegedly disrespecting Amir Khan and the Bolton native's opponent in Saturday's WBO world lightweight title eliminator, Martin Kristjansen. Thaxton claimed on Tuesday morning that his clash with European champion Yuri Romanov, which takes place on Friday, is a far more challenging and riskier match-up than Khan's meeting with Kristjansen, to whom Thaxton mockingly referred to as a Danish pastry. Unsurprisingly, Thaxton's outburst has infuriated Warren, who believes that the Norwich southpaw is merely trying to sell tickets for his fight with Romanov. The facts are that Jonathan Thaxton is fighting at the York Hall, its going out on Sky and if theyre lucky, 300,000 people will watch that fight," he argued in a conference call for Saturday's bout between Khan and Kristjansen. "Thaxtons 32 years of age and hes yet to fight for a world title. Its taken him this long to even get a fight for a European title. And hes got a tough fight ahead of him. Theres no way Id underestimate Romanov. "If he comes through it, Thaxton will be another option for us to look at. But to keep slagging off a 21-year-old kid whos done far more at this early stage of his career than Thaxton could ever have dreamt off is ridiculous. "And we offered him huge money to fight Amir, £125,000, but he turned it down. "And have a look at Thaxtons record and have a look at the guys hes fought over the past few years, they're average, average fighters. "Now look at Amir and look at what hes done at his age. Hes a fantastic record. All Thaxton is doing is riding off the back of Amir. "If Jonathan Thaxton walked down the street how many people would recognise him? "This is no different to what Junior Witter's doing with Ricky Hatton. "And weve seen it a lot down through the years with fighters from Brendan's stable [trainer Brendan Ingle], theyre just trying to get crumbs off a table." But Warren is indeed open to arranging a future bout with Thaxton on Khan's behalf to settle the issue once and for all. "My message to Thaxton would be: 'go and win the European title but dont sell Friday night's fight on the back of Amir because were not selling our fight on the back of Jonathan Thaxton,'" he declared. "'Go about your business and win the European title and then on Monday, if Amirs successful too, who knows what will happen?' "We will consider all our options - on Sunday. If you look at the situation with Enzo Maccarinelli and David Haye, we tried to make that fight a year ago. But it became a much bigger fighter during the course of those 12 months in which Haye won world titles and Maccarinelli made some more defences of his title. "So, if both of these guys come through at the weekend, and I hope Thaxton wins, then well look at it. "But were in the business of Amir Khan. Were planning his career and bringing him along correctly. "If the Thaxton fight is a fight that suits us well take it. It suited us a couple of months ago and he turned it down. But what he should be worrying about at the moment is his own fight and also showing some respect to Amir for what he has done for British boxing. "The sport in this country is on a high at the moment and part of it is down to Amir coming through four years ago at the Olympics. That is what got the resurgence of boxing in this country going."
Fishface has got a f###ing cheek, claiming that Jon Thaxton is "riding off the back of Amir" in order to sell tickets. Does he honestly believe the fans that are going to pack the York hall out on Friday night are only going because Thaxton has discredited Kristjansen as an unsuitable opponent? If FW thinks that I can't decide for myself what constitutes a good fight to go and watch, then I may have to take the matter up with him myself. Does anybody have an email address for Mr Warren?
Sounds like sour grapes from Warren - probably because Thaxton has upstaged Khan on this occasion by fighting Romanov the night before his fight. Don't think they like sharing the limelight. Any knowledgeable boxing fan would surely agree Thaxton faces a tougher fight than Khan. As for him criticising Thaxton for calling Kristjansen a danish pastry I read an article on The Mirror website in which Warren apparently said Thaxton would look like a doughnut if he loses to Romanov!
Apologies - I'm going to the fight and don't want to jinx anything! So bear in mind if I vote it will be with my heart and not my head. I so want Thaxton to win this. :good
