Why is is that so many of the old British telecasts of fights don’t exist? I heard the BBC used to just get rid of archive footage. Is that true? I also have tried to track down fights broadcast back to Mexico and apparently what I’ve been told is that the fights do exist and the government has a ton of footage but will never realease it for whatever reason. I’ll try to find the message I’ve got and share it here but your talking fights like Napoles-Perkins for example. Weird.
For those wanting to know who maybe didn’t know for the shortage of Jofre full fights is because in the 1980s the TV company that had all the archives burned down and lost everything. I was told that years ago back in around 2000 or 2001 and I recently spoke to his son and he confirmed that. I got a message from his daughter a couple of weeks ago and she had said Eder really wants to go back to the Hall of fame and some other places he previously fought but she said it’s just not possible. He isn’t as mobile as he once was and moved in with her six years ago after his wife died. He had some depression but luckily they found some mediciation which has helped though he’s had some memory loss. She told me he likes to watch old videos and look at old pictures. I live in Los Angeles and I drive past the Grand Olympic every day. It’s now a Korean church but still easy to see what the building used to be based on its shape (if you are familiar with that historic venue). I took some photos for them and he was happy to see them. He has an Instagram account which is daughter handles for him and posted one of the photos. I will be writing an in-depth piece on him soon with some insights and pieces of information not shared previously in the articles we’ve seen so far. The movie “10 segundos para vencer” is now out in Brazil and will be available on DVD shortly with English subtitles. I’ll post it in here when it is available and maybe upload it if they are fine me doing so.
I'll look forward to reading that Chris and I'm looking forward to the film. I spoke to Marcel, Eder's son recently about the Saldivar fight and he said it had perished in a fire at TV Tupi. I thought you might of been our old mate Vic when I started seeing your posts and you've got the same avatar.
I think there are more old British BBC telecasts of fights about than you think. It's possible that some families have film but have been asked not to put them in the public domain.
The UK is 5 hours ahead of USA Eastern Standard time, so wake up early AM to check if the presents are there. Or tempt him, though I don't think he's a milk and cookies kind of guy.
I’ve seen posts from that guy. I wish he was still posting here. Yes, I’ve basically only heard a few accounts of the Saldivar fight. The one written in the Ring, the stuff on “O grande campeao” and off a Brazilian poster I used to talk to off maxboxing. He said in the 70s and 80s it was common for Jofre fights to be replayed and often with Jofre’s insights. He told me the Saldivar fight was a work of art. Somebody out there has it whether it’s in Mexico and/or Brazil but Marcel also confirmed that the only full fights known to be in existence are the ones already surfaced and that he doesn’t even have the highlights from the Saldivar fight.
Vic wrote a huge piece using primary Brazilian sources that was very informative and well worth checking out. Not sure if his English version is still around but I pinched some choice quotes I took from it at the time for the Jofre piece I’ve written for this countdown.
I haven’t written in a long time. I’d be literally writing down my first piece in years with this Jofre one.
Just come across this, interesting stuff he said about Harada because that's more or less what me dad said about him https://www.ringtv.com/538052-best-i-faced-eder-jofre/
Yeah I read that. It’s weird he says Medel wasn’t all that powerful though, just accurate. Don’t get me wrong he was really accurate but I’m sure he hit really hard as well, you can see it when he blasts Jofre’s gumshield out!
It seems he really regarded Medels punching technique as being great. I bet you’d get a similar answer from Pacquaio who got his lights switched out by Marquez but I’d imagine he’d say others had heavier hands but Marquez had the superior timing and technique.
you always get these anomalies when you're talking about best puncher. You can be the heaviest puncher in the world but if you can't fight you're not going hit anyone with it at the top level. Medel must have had great timing and power catching people coming in. That was his game counterpunching patiently. I think Chucho was like that as well.
