I am more open minded than I used to be lol. So far you have been told that Zarate, Jofre, Ortiz should/could be top 5. When this is done you might get criticized for not cramming 8-10 guys into a top 5 that can’t fit them all lol. I am sure we will all have different placements and reasonings and at least yours seems well reasoned and thought out. I am just enjoying the ride. Good luck mate
Just an update on the Jofre piece I’m going to post on here. I’m at around 10,000 words and have a lot of new quotes and answers to put in and touch up the language and order so maybe a week perhaps two from finishing it. I’ve gotten some new insights and quotes that haven’t been included in the large, researched articles. I’ve kind of gone from the following structure Bantamweight/Featherweight being an overlooked weight class Jofre’s relative standing and his style His background, upbringing, amateur career His prospect and then contender years Then broken down his 10 biggest fights and pieced around the rest of his career Finishing up with a summary on his impact, views of recent boxing and retirement years. All subject to change of course.
Sounds great but may I make a recommendation? WRITE A BOOK ABOUT JOFRE!!! You could easily expand all this. DO IT! I’d buy it, 100%
I will have a real good look over the weekend. Your return is sparking the forum up nicely mate well done. Imagine just how much it will park up when you do the heavyweights!!!!! After that the middleweights would spark huuuuuuuge interest too. *hint*
I think I will go back to the lower weights first in fact and work my way up. Maybe not all of them though, as I plan to do all the weights eventually and collect them in book form. But of course, I am actually writing a book about Jimmy Wilde, so these top 10s will just get done in between ;-)
Yes I did read it. Jofre passes the eyes test as well as anyone. His record, excellent, and his looses to Harda happened when he was past his best, and Harda in his prime. Harda enjoyed the home court advantage in both fights, and fought a little dirty, using his head. Like I said Jofre had issues making weight for these fights. I've never seen Jofre as low as #5 anywhere, and those who lived in the times speak very highly of him. Most often he's #1 or #2, sometimes #3. Nat Fleisher, very partial to old timers said Jofre is as good as any bantam weight he has seen. After this thread is over, I can post Bradley's all time bantam weight tournament.
I’m so glad you said Jofre had issues making weight. I mean, I should’ve consulted with you on the context of Jofre’s career before I wrote the piece really! Sorry I didn’t think to ask you, And of course, I should’ve consulted all the other top 10 lists. When I saw Jofre at the top of them all, I would’ve known to put him at the top of mine! Could’ve saved myself a lot of research over the last 10 years, and probably could’ve saved precious time watching so many fights! Why didn’t you tell me this before?
Ha thanks, you know I’d love to if I’m being honest but let’s see how this piece comes out first lol.
He's a fine poster ,even if he doesn't agree with my placing of Jofre at no1. TBH he is far more up to speed on the banties than I am!
To be honest, I'm kinda digging this slightly revisionist view of the bantamweights. It will be interesting to see who gets ranked in the Top 3 and Flea's rationale for his picks.
I've just read it on the train into work mate. Brilliant again and very thought provoking. I actually saluted when you name-dropped Vic. Miss that guy on here. I'll try to get on tonight again to post a bit more on it. Looking forward to the rest too, greatly so. I'm sure it will exhibit sound rationale for placing Jofre where you have, though the article already does that to a degree anyway.
Vic loved it, and that meant A LOT! I am very glad you dug it too. It’s good exposing people to fighters they might not otherwise had researched, but for it to be well received by lower weight aficionados as well warms my heart.
