Bring Welliver Sam Sexton then! Bring him Devin Vargas. He can smash Rob Calloway too like Briggs did. That is what I am talking about. Welliver should have had a match against Tua while he was his interim champ and ranked top 15 and eventually top 10. But instead, Tua goes to Monte Barrett because everyone else is smashing him. And we all now know how that worked out. Welliver still seeks to fight Tua if he will take it. It's not the same win as beating the #2 WBO in the world though. I'm not sure Tua will even remain ranked now. All you can do is be active and wait for your opportunity. Welliver doesn't have the resources behind him to pay many of these guys what they would want to fight him. None of the HW's with resources are willing to fight him. So, as 1 of the 7 best positioned HW's in the world ranking bodies, all you can do is sit there and wait like a venus fly trap. That should go to show you how ducked Welliver is. His rankings would go on the line in any match and none of these so called better fighters who are unranked want a shot at tangling with him for them. Think that has anything to do with K2 being willing to petition organizations rather than face their willing ranked contenders? Briggs got 1 and Toney was denied. 2 time setting of bad precident. Even Chisora was completely unranked the month before being inked...though the WBO rated him for beating Sexton. Welliver is not outside the realm of possibility right now. At least he has 60 fights experience, 50 wins and a huge 331 HW round streak of not going down. He is superior to Derek Chisora in experience and in the professionalism to train and fight to the maxes. Wlad has inked guys with pretty much no 12 round experience man.
Welliver has been available. Leapai would likely be willing to veture onto a card. Toney has been available. Tye Fields could be had. Tua is a free agent and not even talking to CK anymore. Banks is in already but he got in basicly with Manny and he was a main sparring partner. Who is keeping Boswell from coming to fight someone? Oliver McCall is a free man. Fres Oquendo is always competitive. But I am not up to date on the inner workings or relations between top HW promoters. I will give you that. They all have to work with K2 at some point though. Why they are not building the next fights better is beyond me. There are guys available to make some better fights with in the division. They all just want to work with K2 on title shots instead of taking some chances and working on contender fights. If they do take a chance it is usually because the ABC's are following suit and giving quick rides to Mandatory Purses...like we have with BWare Stiverne. I just want to see some better fights and some more seasoning for this batch of contenders. Let em sign some dinosaurs instead of these guys. Give big Oliver a shot to break Hopkins record later this year. LOL
Hm interesting post. Yeah, it's true K2 were putting on good undercard fights (Solis/Welliver, Banks/Walker, Banks/Gavern) but it dried up. What's about with J Banks is he still with K2? He has some bad luck last year with Krasniqi agreeing to a fight then bitching out.... I also agree K2 shouldn't be targeting these younger fighters, though I think Dimitrenko and Arreola have enough experience now, and probably need the money, even though they aren't close to K2's level. As for Welliver, give me a break. He did get a shot at the big-time (and on a K2 card!) and he sabotaged himself and showed up looking like a walrus.
I can agree with this--it's surprising K2 didn't try harder for a fight with Toney or Holyfield in the early 2000s....always nice to have an ATG on the resume. At this stage Vitali-Evander is not that ridiculous (if McCall or Tua or Tarver are considered potential opponents, why not Holy?) as it may seem but Evander needs to get a good win first or Vitali will get tons of **** for it.
Welliver wasn't really in top training. He weighed in at 283 pounds on 10 days notice man. Solis could not even knock the kid down. He is now 235 pounds or so and trained by Joe "The Boss" Hipp. He is 29-1-2 in the last 6 years and the only loss is to Solis, with both draws being revenged. He hasn't even had a chance yet to fight a top guy with proper notice and training. He is a proven 12 round fighter, has oodles of experience, and his chin has held up through all 331 HW rounds. You may call Solis in Berlin on 10 days notice a shot, I call it a cherry pick. Tyson Fury vs Wlad in Novemeber might be called a shot by some...I call it a cherry pick.
Messerstick, Tyson Fury seems to be up for just about anything (sans Klitschko). Welliver should start calling him out...maybe he could goad Fury into a fight for the Commonwealth belt? The point is, nobody will take your guy seriously until he beats somebody good. It's very risky, but the way out of perdition for Welliver may be taking on and defeating a good boxer that other boxers would avoid--someone like Michael Grant or Kevin Johnson or Timur Ibragimov. Maybe even a rematch with Solis when he's healthy?
I know Welliver needs to do more....even though I believe he is more accomplished than 2 time Klitschko inked Derek Chisora. By a good margin. The environment though is not exactly condusive. All the top camps want a K2 pay day. They also do not want to risk too much or pay too much to build a guy who is going to be K2 Krushed. Fighting 10K guys while waiting for a 300-500K offer is their chosen path. Even if Welliver were to be backed to the hilt, that K2 check is going to have to cover the investment. How many Tua's, Rahman's, Toney's, Meehans could you buy for that cash? Welliver called out Tua, who has a base. Arreola who has a base. Those dudes don't want to bring Chauncy in for Top 10 HW showdowns. K2 is not calling to see if he will face a Euro guy on 1 of their cards. It's a waiting game, but in the meanwhile he has to keep plugging away and actively defending his regional championships.
K2 didn't exist then, they fought under Universum and no way was Klaus Peter Kohl going to make that happen.
Oh please, a professional boxer that seeks to "make noise" and be taken seriously in the division should be ready at any time to step in at such a chance. Was it a cherry pick when Lewis called up Vitali on 2 weeks notice? No! Vitali stepped in and gave Lewis and sent him running into retirement. Since you want to talk about cherry picking and going on about Welliver's record, let's mention how he cherry picked by fighting an ARM WRESTLING champ with no professional boxing experience immediately after his loss to Solis. 10 days after that he fights another guy with NO PROFESSIONAL BOUTS. Neither man ever fought again after those bouts either! What a confidence builder that was. Total ***** move by Welliver.
Welliver beat up a **** talker arm wrestler. And he would beat up any NZ **** talker MMA guys as well. But my friend, that was part of 5 fights in 45 days to start his comeback with his new team. After about a year off. Chauncy went to New Zealand, he dusted a couple debuters back to back, then he dusted a couple other dudes and revenged a previous draw to win an interim championship to David Tua. Not a bad 45 days work, 5 wins and a title. Since then, his weight has continued to go down, he's been fighting all over the world, and he is now knocking dudes out faster than Rahman. He beat up Tua's cousin last time out in China. All you can do is all you can do. Chauncy has cherry picked some guys....and it has cost him. Many of those guys on his record when he was young and not serious about trying to become HW Champion, were just toyed around with. Since Chauncy is a nice guy he just played to the crowds while outpointing many of the low level guys. Guys he could have murked easily if he had not been working with them. It makes people think he lacks more power than he does. But at the same time, ever since he was an 18 year old kid turning pro out of toughman, Welliver has also accepted checks for getting his arse whooped by the worlds best in their camps. Those aren't no monster checks for dealing with that kind of punishment. Definitely not like fight checks. They called the kid to be on a PPV when he was out of shape and unranked....cause it suited Solis. Now that he is in top 10 and in shape...people say he should not be taken seriously for the last time they put him on TV. I am sure that with 60 days instead of 10he would not have came in at a career high. Even though, he didn't have a serious training team behind him until after that fight.
