Showtime boxing chief Stephen Espinoza isnt in panic mode yet regarding the never-ending negotiations between superstars Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, and says that only a handful of issues remains to make the fight.

But he did say that a backup plan has already been put in place for Mayweather to face either Miguel Cotto or Amir Khan on May 2 if the Pacquiao talks collapse.

Hes definitely fighting on May 2, Espinoza told the Daily News in a phone interview on Friday. His first choice by far is Manny Pacquiao. If it becomes clear that that fight is not achievable, then he would move on to either Amir Khan or Miguel Cotto. Hes made it clear to us that Pacquiao is still his No. 1 priority, and thats where all our energy is focused.

Espinoza said there was still plenty of time to announce the May 2 fight against Pacquiao.

There is urgency to get this done and get it going, but were not in a panic mode in terms of the calendar right now, he said.

Espinoza declined to say if theres a firm deadline for when all parties would move on from a Mayweather-Pacquiao deal, but expressed confidence that whatever issues remain are surmountable.

I would say Im optimistic that it can get done, Espinoza said. We have work to do to bridge the gap on important issues, but the most important thing is that Floyd genuinely wants it and wants it badly, and from everything Ive heard and seen, Manny wants the fight as well.

Speaking in generalities about the complexity of the discussions, he said of the issues involved:

Imagine the Super Bowl was negotiated on a case-by-case basis. So what network the Super Bowl is on, who produced it, which is the home team, where the teams stay, who gets introduced first, what network talent is involved and that gives a little bit of insight of why this process seems to be dragging on for quite a while.

There are two separate negotiations taking place to make the fight: one involves the two boxers agreeing to a deal.

Then, there is the negotiation between Showtime and HBO for a joint Pay-Per-View telecast. HBO has an exclusive deal with Pacquiao, and Showtime has one with Mayweather.

Both have yet to come to terms on an agreement, Espinoza said.

Were down to the last handful of issues. So the handful of issues is small, but the importance of those issues is pretty big, he said without going into detail. There are a few open issues on each element of the deal, on both the fighter/promoter part of the deal and the network to network part of the deal. Neither one is done yet.

Espinoza declined to give a time frame for when he believes a deal could be reached.

No contracts have been signed yet, we're still in the discussion stage, Espinoza said. A breakthrough could come any minute or it could take another week or two.

One school of thought has it that HBO is stalling until Mayweather becomes a network free agent in 2016. But Espinoza hasnt seen any evidence of that, and an HBO source disputed that claim.

Do you actually think Floyd after blind-siding us with the announcement, hes walking out of here and going to Showtime would actually come back here? an HBO mole said. Hes not coming back here. Its just unrealistic.

Sounds optimistic and i'm inclined to believe espinoza, seem like he's been honest throughout this process. This fight doesn't need promoting, I'd start panicking if this isn't signed before around 25/02..

And that leaves 8 to 9 weeks for training. Floyd wants his opponents to be not on their top form by not agreeing to full terms until there's not enough training time left.

8/9 weeks is more than enough time. Recently manny was on a tv show in the UK on sky sports and stated he only trains for 8 weeks before both his fights during the year......... and doesn't go in a boxing gym any other time..... When you have two top athletes who stay in condition year round then you don't need any longer. The longer camps are for guys who have to shed weight too....

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight negotiations is nothing but drama. You've got a dysfunctional dip**** named Mayweather. He's no "businessman." The jerk is illiterate for one thing. He can't even read or write. We.... you, me and everyone else who chooses to follow this dysfunctional drama... all Floyd Mayweather's dysfunctional whor*s. It's our choice to live every second of every day for whatever freaking word comes from someone with inside information on this ******* soap opera. Well... I'm done. I don't give a flip if it gets set on PPV for $1.00 on May 2nd. I'm not spending a nickel on any fight involving this Mayweather illiterate. And you're a Mayweather whor* too if you spend a nickel on any Mayweather PPV fight. Who do they think we are? They think we're their junkies, addicted to something they've got. Screw them. I'll read about the fight in the papers the next day. Period. I won't be missing much. And I won't be the piece of sh*t they think I am, and that they think you are too. Don't watch this fight, if it ever happens to get made. They've blown it with me. Kick them all out of your life, like a girlfriend whose crazy sh*t you're done with.

Oh please. You're telling me you won't watch the historical, ground-breaking Mayweather/Pacquiao?

If you don't, you'll literally be one out of a million. Just wait. Fight Week, the fight is all you'll hear being talked about everywhere you go. Every TV, radio station, conversation. If you still refuse to watch it the night when the whole world does...you'd have to be a fool! You're missing out on history being made!!!

Imagine your kids or grandchildren asking you about it 30 years from now.

"Did you watch the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight!?"

"No, dear. I refused to watch it."

As the boxing world sits in a reckless anticipation, awaiting a final decision regarding the proposed super-bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., it may be time to look in a different direction. Here are my possible opponents for Manny Pacquiao, should the Floyd fight wither away
1. Amir Khan.
2. Jesse Vargas.
3. Juan Manuel Marquez.
4. If not Floyd, then no one.

If no Floyd, Vargas will be the only "logical" choice. Then the Matthysse vs Provodnikov winner.

Marquez doesn't want to fight again and Khan is with Haymon.

Manny has a lot of options right now , but for me he looks a little tired of the whole sport.

It wouldnt surprise me if he just jacked it in.

Chasing Floyd looks exhausting.
