Kos' would do some ace domestic ones, surprised neither he nor Ishy have contributed to this thread :deal
Sibbo would be a good un'. The fight I'm just about to put on Youtube is Kaylor v Sibson. A lovely fighter to watch. :good
Encompass him in yours then :yep Can't you involve Christie and make it a '8-s British Prospect' mega entry Sibbo' was quality, but one fight I'm interested in is him getting stopped inside a round by Mwale. Anyone know anything about it? Mwale was another really good 175lber in those days, and naturally bigger than Sibson. But he also had a win over Marvin Johnson, but the only footage I've seen of him is Saad destroying him with one of the greatest K.Os in history. Lennox....Lynch.....Hamada.....Saijo......FFS
No chance. I ain't cut out for the mega posts like you are, especially as I've just given up the green stuff again :yep I got my work cut out in providing a good entry on just Kaylor alone.
Another reason why I'm interested in him. I definitely consider him a good win for Saad, but I've seen nothing of him before or after, he looked good in that fight and unlike say, Zarate Vs Batista, he had a few good wins on paper beforehand, but I know nothing of the context. Sibson better at Middle, Johnson would have many bumps along the way, but looked good against Saad before getting caught with that picture perfect shot. Anyways.......Sumbu? :verysad
We'll see. I've just been buried in party work, and if I was to do one of those things I'd have to take my time with it. Wouldn't want to just throw any old thing out. I'll have it out by the time klompton's Greb book hits the market, I can assure you that. Anyways, the only other footage I've seen of Mwale is against Mustafa Muhammad, and it's one of Mustafa's most impressive performances. So if you're looking to watch some Mwale fights, that's probably not the best one. Some very intriguing wins early on, though. His record would indicate that he was quite the puncher as well, which is interesting given how skilled a boxer he looked to be against Saad.
My book will be out before Steves Can't wait to read it though. On Mwale-Gregory, it's criminal I don't have that. I'll look to grab some more Mustafa over the weekend, I need to get a more comprehensive outlook on him, only seen about 5 of his fights, criminal.
Eder Jofre Name: Eder Jofre Alias: Golden Bantam / O Galo Do Ouro Birth Name: Éder Zumbano Jofre Born: 1936-03-26 Birthplace: Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil Nationality: Brazilian Hometown: Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil Stance: Orthodox Height: 5′ 4″ / 163cm Reach: 66″ / 168cm Managers: Abraham Katzenelson and Marcos Laza Trainer: Aristides Jofre Bouts: 78 Won: 72 Lost: 2 Draw: 4 KOs: 50 *Eder never have been knocked out. Only dropped two times, against Jose Smecca and Jose Legra (the ref didn´t call as a KD) Eder Jofre was born in São Paulo, Brazil, grew up in a big Family of boxers, his dad “Kid” Jofre was his trainer. He represented Brazil in the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games in the Bantamweight. He lost in the quarterfinals. This content is protected His first tough opponent was Ernesto Miranda, by all accounts a fast-handed boxer with good footwork. The Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo says the draw was a fair result (in the first fight, 1957-08-16), in a violent and skillful fight….. Also, the newspaper says: “Eder was almost dropped in round 9, when Miranda landed a great right on his chin…..in the same round the Brazilian landed a left counter on the jaw and stunned the platino fighter” The last round was dominated by Jofre, who almost gets the knockout, but was too tired. Few days later they fought again....with a same result, a draw. His first notable win was over the talented Leo Espinosa, a highly ranked philipino fighter with wins over Pone Kingpech and Sadao Yaoita….. This content is protected Eder Jofre vs Leo Espinosa Eder won a decision in the famous Ginásio do Ibirapuera. After some good wins, against Ruben Caceres and Gianni Zuddas….Eder fought with another good, ranked philipino…Danny Kid. In a great display of head movement, body punching and an awesome left hook, Eder won by UD, dropping Kid three times. Everyone was very surprised by the heart of the philipino fighter. Jofre vs Kid [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQkTHoo1Mks[/ame] Check out the let hooks..... Jofre´s first title shot came after this important win. The South American Bantamweight Title. Eder faced his previous rival, the argentinian Ernesto Miranda, a good rivalry between Brazil and Argentina. And this time Eder beat him convincingly two times, one by decision when Eder gave a masterful performance, and another, some months later… by KO in 3 rounds. Then came probably the most important fight of his career. A defining moment for Eder Jofre. The first fight against Medel, a very good fighter, very skilled one. Make no mistake because of his record, Medel was capable of great things (beat Harada by knockout ! Beat Walter McGowan, Jesus Pimentel…, as you can see in this fight below..... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Z-1BpBZyys[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5cY7JLcKQI&feature=relmfu[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3vQ9xBWJhE&feature=relmfu[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnp90vxPIHw&feature=relmfu[/ame] A masterful performance by Eder, brutal display, not only a skilled performance, but it is also a huge show of toughness and heart, by both…. Eder himself confessed later that he was almost knocked out by a left hook to the body landed by Medel, one of his specialities….. Jofre´s first World Title The NBA BW championship was on the line, in Los Angeles. Against Eloy Sanchez, an unknown fighter with a great upset win over the Mexican and former BW champion of the world, Jose Becerra. In another great performance, Eder won by knockout in 6. Check out the beautiful knockout: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzW1Oltr0rU[/ame] Great Right hand as always ! Eder then defeated such fighters as Billy Peacock, Piero Rollo(good fighter), Sadao Yaoita, Ramon Arias. Beating all of them before the limit. He was already a hero in Brazil at this point. A famous person, and probably only less famous than Pelé. This content is protected Eder Jofre and Pelé. 01-18-1962: Eder Jofre vs Johnny Caldweel- World Bantamweight Title 1962, in one of his best performances (his best performance in the opinion of many people who saw the fight), Eder beat Caldwell. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JW-_Nfkb7NM[/ame] Caldwell was a very talented fighter. Very underrated today. Jofre´s speed was very good here, probably the faster version of him ever ( in my opinion)….. and his accuracy is outstanding in this performance…… Check out the right hands Jofre throws….Isn´t this special ?? Caldwell´s manager jumped into the ring to stop the bout. Jofre won by TKO, in a impressive night. Willie Pep, referee of the bout, said Caldwell was a very tough guy with tons of heart. He was impressed and said Jofre was definitely the best BW of the world. After the fight, Caldwell said: “The best man won”. Some good wins, against ranked fighters like Marques, Aoki, a rematch with Medel and the very good Colombian Caraballo. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vri_0GetaEY[/ame] Eder vs Caraballo And then Eder faced the ATG Fighting Harada, a truly great fighter, one of the most skilled ever. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jtS6INjpgg[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAYeqUyZX5E&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caOTe3GT8Dc&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F66MzY42lY&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bK1cO5ZZJ1A&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tL7PCxG4vWw&feature=related[/ame] Amazing fight ! In two of the most skillful efforts by two fighter ever, Harada get the wins. In Japan. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qy36Fe0jW2o[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ycywy9WfB8[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yR-o0aw8c0&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s2I7cvGkcs&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isg-FI2VHZY&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mehaPA351M8&feature=related[/ame] Eder never accepted the results, and until today says he won both fights. And blame Harada for head butts, and for not accept to fight him in Brazil, since he was the champion, not Harada. In the rematch Eder was very drained, he simply couldn´t make the weight anymore. A little frustrated, Jofre retired. 1969: Jofre make a comeback In 1969, with 33 years old, he decided to make a comeback. Now, at Featherweight. He won everyone he faced, including a rematch with Manny Elias, and a great fight against the Japanese Shig Fukuyama, a great war and one of the hardest fights fo Eder´s career. He put on a body punching clinic here. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmDTyBdFvCQ[/ame] Brutal fight..... 1973 – Eder Jofre VS José Legra – Featherweight championship of the world. A huge event in Brazil, that fight was for the WBC title, against the highly skilled Cuban-spanish José Legra. Eder disadvantages are many, he was slower, older, and shorter. Legra started faster, and dropped Eder (the ref didn´t call a KD). However….after the round 4 Eder start to win more rounds. And even the Spanish Press didn´t called a robbery. As you can see in this clip Eder landing many good right hans, one of those stunned Legra a bit. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSvg2y-Qhh0&feature=related[/ame] After this, he knocked out a past prime Saldivar in the same year. Didn´t fought in 74 and later.... Jofre won 6 fights in 1976 and then retired for real….. If you have never seen him in action at FW you really have to watch some of the footage below: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWDOZ2zUZBM[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iv91jglcMSU&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F34GkN4haLg&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW8iasWOQRk&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juHMjmtCl-o&feature=related[/ame] Today he is underrated in his own country. Most of the people know who he is, but they don´t know exactly how great he was. He is a member of IBHOF since 1992. -------------------------------------------
PS- I´m sorry if there is grammatical mistakes, my english is not great.... By the way, amazing thread ! Special thanks for Flea Man, who told me about the thread.....Thanks !
Nice post Vic :good, I'll have a good peel through tomorrow. Take at look at Jimmy Wilde, Ezzard Charles and Jimmy Bivins, they are the best posts, even Flea said so :yep
Bujia and flea, the story on Mwale Sibson was Mickey Duff apparently selling Mwale as a non-threat light hitting journeyman to build the young Sibbo up on. Sibson's handlers didn't realise he had been a talented amatuer, who Duff expected to develop into a top contender...and was also a serious puncher. Sibson never had the frame or style to fight good light-heavies, with his tiny t-rex arms and was swiftly obliterated.Duff was always a crafty ******* as a match-maker and promoter. He pulled a similar trick on Don King with the Laing\Duran debacle. Mwale was definitely a very good fighter, a sort of cross between a Kalule\Kates style cutie and a more methodical seek and destroy approach. All the tools in theory to be a top champion, but as the sudden KO against Saad showed, things could unravel suddenly when a division is that stacked.I don't think he really recovered from that and was finished after the Gregory loss, which was also brutal. That era produced at least 4 fighters who had the tools of potentially great boxer-punchers, yet didn't even pick up a title...Bennett, Kates, Burnett, Mwale and guys like Finnegan,Fourie, Hutchins and Schmidtke were technically formidable as well.
