Dempsey has a certain edge over most of these other guys because he could, if he were alive, demonstrate that pretty much everyone he ever hit is actually dead right now. Meanwhile, someone like Wilder, for instance, I think, has only living victims. So, it's like, did he hit them all that hard or no?

Fitzsimmons is an interesting shout out. His body punches certainly seemed effective in his time.

Surprised no one mentioned him. He had the reputation as a murderous puncher.

People continually confuse the most effective boxers & punchers, overall & in combination, with Raw Power.

There is no way that Fitzsimmons, Dempsey, Marciano, Louis or even Tyson hit as hard as the biggest bangers.
Tyson would likely tell you that, & some guys he fought hit harder-at least Bonecrusher, Ruddock & Bruno.

There are diminishing returns after a certain point, but the others who were at most ~ 200 lbs. lean-some in the 180's would not be able to hit as hard as the hardest hitting Big Guys.

They hit very hard for HW. But even the biggest of the old timers above, Louis, did not hit as hard as a couple guys he fought-Baer & Galento.

Guys from Shavers Butterbean his harder than much better fighters.

Among those you names, & likely near the top in absolute terms, Liston & Foreman are the hardest hitters.

Going on pure power, not finishing ability, and in chronological order:

    Baer
    Liston
    Foreman
    Lewis
    Wlad

Are probably the standouts among lineal champions.

Men like Dempsey, Louis and Tyson might be more dangerous finishers, but probably had a bit less power punch for punch.

We have the exact same first three! Change your 4. and 5. to Wilder and Lewis respectively then your list will match mine, and therefore be correct. :D

I excluded Wilder on the grounds that he was not lineal, and of course he is still active.

I agree completely. Except I would say "almost certainly" had (more than a bit) less power punch for punch.

Putting an attrition puncher like Marciano above Wlad or Wilder is ludicrous.

But you either know that already or you will never know it.
