He had a nasty clout, for sure. Him, Al Gainer, Ray Actis, Bob Satterfield......all of 'em had a nasty kick.

 

I always wondered how Marvin Hagler's chin would have done against Julian Jackson.

 

He took blows from Mugabi, Hearns, Hart, Briscoe, Roldan and other bangers. So history seems to favor him taking it from Jackson without too much trouble. Marvin was an iron man.

 

Everyone says Shavers, but I personally don't see it. He was a big puncher with his right, but that's about it. I think Foreman was one of, if not the hardest (and don't use the "he couldn't knock Ali out" argument, because Shavers couldn't either, and that was when Ali was OLD) punchers ever. He didn't even need to punch properly to hurt you. He's the kind of guy who can arm punch you, and still have you in a crumpled mess on the floor. And look what he did to the heavy bag during training!

 

Well Mike MaCallum who had a great chin took his best shots and walked through him,I'm sure Hagler would have done the same

 

I think that Shavers must have hit harder than Foreman, because so many common opponents and sparring partners said that he did.

The same aplies when comparing Max Baer to Joe Louis.

The take home leason?

The hardest puncher in a given era is rarely the gretest fighter, or even the greatest finisher.

 

Did he miss his opponent entirely on those 6 occasions that he didn't KO them?

 

I thought the same thing. A julian punch does look more than most had.

Battling Nelson, Abe Attell, Kid Herman, Kid Broad, Benny Yanger.....all of 'em claimed Herrera was the hardest puncher who ever lived. Even Sam Langford's manager called him "the greatest one-punch knockout artist I ever saw". Coming from someone who saw Langford starch opponents on a regular basis, this is the highest praise.

I agree that Archie had many qualities and was way more than an unidimensional puncher .... but I think that, besides, he was a hard puncher; not the very best, but certainly one deserving mention

Common; a guy who got 130+ KO (70%+ of his victories) must have some firepower :scaredas:

 

Jackson wouldn't make it past 8 with Hagler.

He'd be beaten badly and knocked out. I doubt Jackson would land much, too.
