The heavyweights really are crap, aren't they?

Yes Mendoza, the heavyweight division for the first time in many years finally has some young decent talent. But sam peter is not in the top 5. He got beat in the first fight by obese 38 year old middleweight, and he got floored 3 times and outfought by 38 year old jameel mccline.

Ruslan Chagaev, Much Improved Nicolay Valuev, Alex Potvekin are all much better than samuel peter.

fists of fury said: Tony Thompson should be ashamed of his performance. It sucked. It was gutless. It was wretched. His trainer was begging him to throw the jab, to throw something, but it fell on deaf ears. When a trainer has to beg his fighter to fight back, to me that fighter has no heart.

Hard to disagree with you, having seen the fight. It was a very poor match to watch - big slow guys - and one a southpaw - just to make it messier.

Have seen better bouts between well matched guys who aren't even contenders!

You go fight him if you think it's so easy/

Seriously, Wlad is one of those guys who from tapes looks simple but once in the ring poses all kinds of problems. Lennox was quite the same in these regards.

Didn't critisize Vlad. It not his fault that he's been able to get as far as he has with such a basic technique. His power is indesputable. But he's been able to get by without having to develop any other part of his game.

Nobody would question Thompson's gameness - he got in there to start with. But he didn't have a go. He just tried to survive and then had nothing left to give, even if he might have wanted to in the later stages.

Thompson's corner kept providing small doses of commonsense every break but he didn't seem to want to know about it!

So anytime a champ beats down his opponent and he becomes mentally and physically defeated and his corner tells him to do something yet he can't....I should say he has no heart??? :huh

Gotcha. I will make sure to call 99.9% of the heavyweights who have ever stepped into the ring.

Exactly. People don't understand the combination of height/size with skill. All I have ever heard is how EASY it is to beat Lennox (or Wlad for that matter)...yet it rarely turns out that way.

I´m pretty sure these guys would be top10 guys and would get a title fight in any era after the reign of Jess Willard - for me modern day boxing began with Dempsey.

Watch the between rounds action in Thompson's corner again. His trainer keeps begging him to throw the jab and right hand, and Thompson keeps saying "Trust me," as if he has some sort of gameplan, or maybe it was an epiphany.(?)

This goes on for a few rounds with Thompson doing next to eff-all, and then his trainer once again calls for Thompson to throw the left jab.
Thompson looks at him and rather belligerently asks "And then?"

    It boggles the mind...

You say he was mentally and physically beaten, but this was no beatdown in the Marciano v Cockell mold. This was not a brutal fight. He was told (begged) to simply throw a jab, to get his foot in the door...but he didn't. Now if a fighter can't even do something as rudimentary and basic as that, then I have every reason to question his heart, especially when he pretends to know what he's doing.

When I think of the sacrifices many heavyweight challengers have paid to wear that belt or at least fight for it, Thompson's 'effort' was insulting.

You have capsuled it pretty well Suzie, Cockell was rated no2 as you know.He wasn't a world beater ,but neither are most of those in Mendoza's list .

Now this is silly. I do not have any agenda against any boxer, just bad information. If you think Jonny Arthur, a man who lost to most of the best fighters he fought is a talented super heavyweight; I have no words except to say you are wrong.

Peter is not top 5 today? You are in the minority, for the record he beat Toney twice, and one of them was convincing. Peter got the better of Toney for sure. I seem to vaguely recall a custom avatar on this topic.

Funny because even though u won the bet, I was the closest to predicting the fight result.

You Claimed pre fight "peter is going to steamroll toney easyily in under 5 rounds, james doesnt stand a chance"

I claimed pre fight "toney is going to use his smart defensive wizadry to avoid peters shots, and is going to hit peter with counter right hands all night to take the decision"

    whos prediction was closer? Mine

Well he is certainly not better than valuev, potvekin, or chagaev, wlad. so i guess he could fit at the # 5 spot, though he did get embarrased and floored 3 times by a 37 year old jameel mccline

    peter went 1-1 with toney
