The Importance of Iron Chinned G'ness In Boxing

Salvador Sanchez and Juan LaPorte had the best featherweight chins I've seen in my lifetime. Considering who hit them and their responses to those punches, it's simple to say they were packing granite.

 

Had no good reason to. He was a definition natural middleweight and World Champion hell bent on carving out a legacy and fully conscious of his standing in one of boxing's greatest divisions. That's what your forgetting with guys like him and Monzon... It used to mean something to be a Champ. Divisional dominance is the ****, man. :deal :yep

 

I couldn't ****ing stand Hamed but if I'm being honest I never once saw him hurt in a fight. All the KD's he suffered were almost always attributed his severe lack of balance. Even the big shots he took from Barrera were magnified by Prince never having his feet underneath him. As much as I couldn't stand the cocky ***** he did have one hell of a chin.

Like Robinson going 200 fights without ever being stopped as a direct result of punches landed by an opponent? Like fighting rated middleweights while weighing in at no more than 142? That's stretching it IMO. He just has to be top ten, I don't care if it's not 'what he's known for'. That 1 dingy little "TKO loss" over a career that long is one of his more impressive feats. Guy was totally shot the last five or six years he fought FFS. Nobody could put him out.

 

Hagler and LaMotta both had steel jaws, but Chuvalo took shots from bigger men and never went down. He took 3 rounds of non-stop punishment from Foreman and when the ref stopped the fight, Chuvalo said "Are you crazy?"!

Like Gatti his chin is overrated. Holyfield could be hurt but his heart and ability to recover is what made it seem like he had an iron chin. It was a very good chin but not tops.

 

Ultimately, I have to agree. Holyfield has dropped considerably from where I previously believed him to be.

 

Gavilan: Down twice in 143 fights (Williams, Basilio), never stopped.
Monzon: Down once in 100 fights (his last, against Valdez), never stopped.

If LaMotta and Hagler can get top five love, why not them? It's puzzling. Raging Bull and Legendary Nights much?

 

Well Ray doesn't get love mainly because IMO he was a lot better than the fighters he fought and a lot of people overlook his toughness because of his advanced skillset.

 

Well, he was several generations ahead of his time athletically and really just a bewildering force. Have you seen how fast and spry he still is in the second Fullmer fight as a 36-year-old, nearly 'washed up' incarnation of himself? Just shredded all over too. **** ain't right.

Hagler's chin gets the hype it does from walking through Hearns shots and the Mugabi fight.

Most fighters down have those type of performances vs big punchers and if they do they just arent as well known as Hagler vs Hearns/ Mugabi.
