That is also true, but I am sure you can not say that to PAc's career right now. But for JMM, I am afraid we can say stupid in terms of his business decisions.
The reason why he went there was due to his desperation to win back the title. Unluckily, he lost in his attempt to get it back. Prior to that, he was stripped of his title becasue no one wanted to promote his mandatory fight. As in no one. Why? As shown in his negotiation with the Pac rematch, they were difficult to transact with, considering the fact that he is not really a fan favorite like MAB or EM.
This is where it goes wrong in this debate about whether Marquez wanted or did'nt want the Pac rematch right after...... .....those of you making an argument that Marquez did'nt want to fight pac, bring up the John fight. The John fight! The John fight has nothing to do with Marquez truning down 750k......The John fight for Marquez actually took place a year after Morales had faced and beaten Pacquiao, what does one fight have to do with the other. The JMM detractors point to Marquez chosing to fight John instead of Pac, he took 30k instead of 750k......that just is'nt the truth. In fact, Morales had already beaten Pac in March of 2005 when JMM took on Victor Polo on the JL Castillo-Diego Corrales undercard. Why dont people point to Marquez taking on Victory Polo for X amount of money and ducking Manny Pac???? The John fight came well after, in fact a year after Morales boxed the pants off of Manny Pac. The John fight was a fight that JMM because I believe JMM had for political reason only the WBA knows, had stripped JMM of his WBA title. The WBA ordered a JMM-John fight take place. Arum did'nt want to promote that particular fight because it would have released JMM out of his contract with Arum because JMM was only obligated to Arum for only one fight. When Arum refused to promote it, it went up for purse bids to the highest bidder. The highest bidder turned out to be Chris Johns promoter, in fact he was the only bidder...... At that point, JMM could have either done two things.....go to Indonesia to fight for the title, or go home and wait until Bob Arum decided that he wanted Marquez on one of his cards in a non-title fight. Team Marquez wanted out of Bob Arums claws as soon as possible. Essentially the fight was taken by Marquez because it was the only way to have released himself from the claws of Bob Arum. Since it was a WBA order for the fight to take place for the championship, my guess is that that order by the WBA would have released JMM from under Bob Arum whether Arum wanted to promote the fight or not. If JMM does'nt take the John fight, God knows how much more time would have elapsed before Marquez could legally get a fight and at the same time rid himself from being under the promotion of Top Rank and Bob Arum. I dont know the exact details of the whole situation, but I'm under the impression that team Marquez knew the risk of going to indonesia, but were willing to go through with it if it released JMM from Arum.....which it did. In any regards, inexplicably the John and pac fights are mentioned in threads like these as if one fight has something to do with the other......and the facts are that one fight has absolutely nothing to do with the other. The John fight was made well after Negotiations had broken down and the Erik Morales-Pac fight was made instead. Well after that one fight has nothing to do with the other. You're a reasonable enough poster around here Morrisey, why do you even mention it as if it was a choice between taking the Pac fight and the John fight for JMM???:huh atsch
Yeah its this whole WBA fiasco thats affecting all their title holders that pisses me off. JMM was a unified WBA and IBF champion, and was awarded the super champion status by the WBA for being unified, so now they can have another normal WBA champion to pay more fees for the title, and the guy who got it was Chris John. Since nobody would promote his shitty mandatory for the IBF belt, the IBF stripped him from their title, and since he no longer was the unified champion, the WBA stripped him from the super-champion belt and would not give him the WBA belt back because they already had CJ as the title holder. Now this is complete bull**** by the WBA. JMM was desperate to get his title back and end his contract with Arum, so he goes to Indonesia and gets jobbed again. I'm just glad his career is straighten out. From all the criticism Golden Boy Promotions gets, they do help out a lot of their fighters.
I did not mention it as a choice, did I?:blood I listed it down vis a vis with his other fights' purses and compared it to the 750k offered in the Pac rematch..
You know, I was'nt exactly sure how it went down, but now that you mention it, I never knew JMM was appointed Super Champion status. So if I'm not mistaken, essentially what happened is that when the IBF stripped Marquez for inexplicable reasons, so did the WBA for being stripped by the IBF and not being the unified champion. In the meantime, Chris John who should'nt even be the Champ, now is walking around with the belt that JMM should have. How corrupt can boxing get....without losing a fight, JMM gets politically stripped from his WBA and IBF titles!atsch :-( I just wonder how much Bob Arum who hated Nacho Beristein with a passion have to do with getting JMM stripped! Guys like Arum want to have as many good fighters under his thumb, and he did'nt like Nacho not wanting to have JMM cuddle up right underneath it.:-(
What does this mean that you wrote? You're making a statement that has JMM turning down 750k to lose for 30k!
The reason they always bring it up is becasue of the absurdity of what had transpired. Irony is a funny thing. From an offer of 750k and we have to admit DIvac, this is his biggest career payday at that time (and up to now, in fact) no matter where you look at it, he went to Asia to fight for a laughable 30k. And why? Becasue they tought 750k was an insult..:yep
One has nothing to do with the other. I've explained why Marquez took the John fight even though they would have preffered not to go to Indonesia. The reality is that Nacho wanted to release themselves from Arum who was favoring Erik Morales and not promoting JMM properly. Nacho wanted a fresh start with a different promoter who would promote them, and by God I'm not a DLH supporter, but as far as promoting capable fighters, GBP has done a wonderful job promoting Latino based fighters who would otherwise been getting royally dry humped by Bob Arum! ....and thats a fact Morrisey! I heard Marquez got 500K to fight Juarez.....Marquez would'nt have gotten 1/5 of that under the banner of Top Rank!:deal
Of course, everybody who knows anything knew that a year later, JMM was going to be subjected to a 30k payday. Domngo pal, why the heck did'nt you write Nacho and warn him to accept 750k or be subjected a year from now to fighting for 30K! Of course, everybody that knows anything knew this! :rofl
Though I agree with you that GBP has done a better job with him than Arum, but nevertheless: He got 650k from his first fight with Pac, an upstart at that time.:deal And he got only 750k for his fight with MAB, the exact amount offered to him in 2004 by Arum.
Have you not read???? Nacho would have taken JMM to fight John for free if it meant getting rid of being under the thumb of Bob Arum!
He got 750k for the MAB fight with a promise that the winner would get alot more for a Pac fight! .....it was unfortunate that MAB showed his true colors and cried like a whining baby that he deserved the Pac fight regardless of the outcome of the Marquez fight. GBP actually wanted to keep their promise and negotiate for JMM to fight Pac, but MAB was already rumored to be talking with Bob Arum on the side and willing to depart with GBP if it meant getting a fight with Pac. There was nothing GBP could do with those events, if they declined to promote MAB againt Pac, the Pac-Mab fight would have gone on without GBP! The promotional co's were also battling eachother for the rights to Pac, one of the contingencies to the settlement was for a Pac-MAB fight to be made. Thats the fight that Arum wanted , because it was the much easier fight for Pac , a fight with little risk, as opposed to a fight with a huge risk in JMM for Pac! Get real people, as we speak, Bob Arum is squirming and scheming to get Pac fights with anybody other than JMM! Unfortunately the fight will not happen in 2008! I'm certain that JMM will be willing to accept less than Pac, but the fight will not happen because both Arum and Roach are in agreement, JMM is too high risk for Pac's drawing power and legacy if he should lose! Although I'm hoping, the fight will not happen in 2008, you can quote divac on that! :fire
