If I whined about how boring football is to a hardcore football fan because I didn't enjoy El Classico, he'd have the right to hate casual football fans.
Superstars aren't a bad thing but they need to be Superstars based on style not the fact they have a loud mouth. Having someone like Gonzalez, Canelo or Golovkin as a superstar would be great for the sport. A busy, active and aggressive fighter could recapture the fans attention for the long term.
Superstars are needed. It will raise awareness and many casuals will become "real fans". Just as long as those superstars do their due diligence and fight the best and be the best.
Sigh.... It is impossible to get rid of "superstars" in any sport, let alone Boxing. For that to happen, a huge majority of fans would have to treat each fighter with indifference. Not going to happen. Superstars don't ruin boxing. If you want someone to blame for the sport of kings having been "ruined" then start with the sanctioning bodies greed and officials who care more about money and favours then the sports wellbeing. Love them or hate them (and most of you on this thread seem to go towards the latter) Superstars do bring some needed attention to the sport. Mayweather's fight most likely brought some new fans who saw much better action in Canelo vs Kirkland and GGG's and Chocolito's fights. Not all superstars pick and choose and quite frankly, some of the demands we place on them are more to do with are own selfish desires. We've seen those who we wouldn't call superstars do some picking and choosing or ducking just to help their careers. And I know this pains most of you but we ALL started as casual fans. You don't get into a sport straight away as a hardcore fan; you show an interest and over time you've decided you're into it or it's not for you. So therefore, attracting casual fans is NOT A BAD THING and it is necessary for a majority of sports to continue thriving (and since Boxing isn't exactly thriving compared to the golden days, getting more casual fans and keeping their interest is even more important). So no, getting rid of superstars or casual fans would not help boxing but it would hinder it. Not kill it but Boxing would suffer.
I mean really...if you removed Curry, Harden, Westbrook, Lebron, Kobe, Durant from the NBA as well as the NBA's casual fans or team "bandwagoners" would the sport flourish more or suffer?
Bandy looks quite fun... I know ****** all about water polo other than its a sport and I couldn't name a superstar innit... You never said it had to be a successful sport
I agree to an extent, its survives in a partially vegetative state without the casuals and perks back up to being a wheelchair bound drooling CP patient with them. Boxing hasn't been truly popular the way it once was with or without casual fans for almost 2 decades now, and if Manny and Mayweather couldn't make the masses truly interested, I don't many others will either.
