Pernell, he was effective against every style he faced.

Duran was the better skilled offensive fighter, Pernell was more of a defensive puzzle but with Duran you were fighting a shark with the brain of a dolphin

Was just thinking, if Whitaker had the punching power of a Duran while retaining every other skill & attribute, he might very well have been the closest thing to a perfect fighter there ever was caught on film :think

I think it's like asking what fruit you like better; an orange or a peach... Both are great in their own way, you can't compare other than saying they're both good fruit.

They have different styles and both were ATG's at employing them. I could say my opinion is that Whitaker is more effective against a wider range of styles, specifically referring to Duran's vulnerability to boxers with movement.

I don't think a straight answer is possible. Both are world-class fighters with ATG skills. We're splitting hairs beyond that.

I agree, thats why I asked the classic section the question :D

I found it very hard to choose myself so was interested in what other fans thought about it & there is no wrong answer as such, splitting hairs is exactly what it is.

    Ps. very close poll.

Duran with the footwork of Wilfredo Gomez and **** of Jack Johnson would be tough to beat tbf.

Whitaker was more slippery, and generally better on defense, but overall I would have to say Duran was more skilled. Duran had a much better blend of offense and defense than did Whittaker.

As for Duran's defensive skills, they were nothing to sneeze at. Ironically, Duran's fine defense was highlighted only later in his career, against ATG's such as SRR and Hagler. By then Duran was clearly over the hill, and generally not as good as he had been during his peak at 135 lbs.
