Mine would be HW: Jeffries/Dempsey/Holmes/Foreman/Vitali LHW: Can't think at this moment Middle: Lamotta/Monzon/Fitzsimmons Light Middle: Mugabi Welterweight: Henry Armstrong Lightweight: Henry Armstrong Super Feather: Arguello Featherweight: Henry Armstrong
One thing is for sure, and that's if he does keep fighting that "one more fight", he will eventually meet his poison, either in a better fighter on the way up, or a lesser fighter when he does indeed "turn old" and he's ripe for the taking. If he was truly smart, like just a handfull of fighters in boxing history, he would retire right now, while "on top".
Most would have said that before Tarver, Winky, Calazage, Pavlik. I for 1 didn't want him to face Calzage or Pavlik
Very poor era when the better middleweights jumped ship Seems like being judged on title reign because of what he's done since (which is like talking about Basilio's ranking at 147 based on his fights with Robinson) Lost to the two best he fought at the weight (or 2 of the best 3 if Trinidad counts as 'Top 2'. He doesn't for me) Only won belt at 3rd attempt (and Mercado was no robbery, even Ring magazine and Boxing News thought it was fair draw). In other eras might not have received one attempt Massively outclassed by Jones and it was regarded as a poor performance by Roy. Scorecards were laughable. 10-2 was far more accurate (which is how most scored it). His tenure happened because clearly the best fighter in the division stepped up in weight
I have no insight to his future plans, but I personally believe that one fight is driving Hopkins to continue. I just can't see him choosing to fight a guy like Dawson or Kessler (although I would certainly favor him over Kessler and give him a solid shot against Dawson), maybe a 3rd fight with Taylor but that's unlikely. I think he only wants at most 2 fights, rematches with Calzaghe and Jones. I see the Jones fight happening, whether RJJ wins or loses, Calzaghe not so much.
Any of it lies? :good I mean, Monzon's name has been mentioned here, what more did people want from him? A title loss before he actually won the crown? Then a few extra defences against the likes of Bobby Watts, Hedgemon Lewis, Bunny Sterling, Eckhard Dagge, Mike Colbert and then lose those last two to Rodrigo Valdes so he could be more like Hopkins? :yep
For me Monzon is the only elite atg at mw. Won´t argue with you here, he is the best mw ever. Hopkins is one of the atgs at mw but not elite. You have some points but you are too harsh. You could write any fighter down like that. I agree that he´s overrated at the moment. I mean, come on, Hopkins-Marciano? Hopkins-Foster? That´s exagerating. I don´t do lists but ranking him in the top20 is also overrating him imo. Hopkins is an atg and a legend in his time and imo he should rank about as high as Hagler and Jones if you wanna rank him. I´m a big fan of Hopkins, aside from Duran and Schmeling, he is my favourite fighter but I think I have quite a balanced view of him.
I rate him Top 5 middleweight probably, but you're right these threads are pathetic. And, like I mentioned, it seems people are elevating his status at 160 because of what he's done since. :huh
