I think people here underrate Ketchel because of how unskilled he appears on film. I have him at No. 3 at middleweight, based on resume and dominance.

I think Ketchel was a great fighter I see his name a lot around so I don't think he is underrated. He is recognised as one of the hardest hitters in any weight classest to boot which still gets him much attention and he died so young (24!) while accomplishing so much. Some thing people may not know though:

Nat Fleischer, the late ring historian and founding editor of The Ring magazine, considered Stanley Ketchel to be the greatest middleweight in history.

He also knocked out Jack Johson (it was a double knockout) Ketchel lost when Johnson got to his feet first.

When did that happen? I know they fought and that Johnson carried Ketchel but got knocked down when he get careless, got up and knocked Ketchel out with his next punch - due to beeing off-balance from the punch he fell over but that no way was a double knockout.

When Greb fought Walker he was a middleweight. When he beat Tommy Loughran weighing 167 he was a light-heavyweight. That's pretty easy.

Hence his being underrated. There's no point in most of the names mentioned as those guys ARE regarded as great middleweights. Toney is not regarded as a 'great' at 160. I think h2h he was, and could have been if he had kept making the weight longer and not ran into Roy Jones.

The way I see it, he proved against McCallum(even at his very best) that he was incapable of conclusively beating a fighter who could be classified as a great MW. Which ones would you favor him over?

I'd personally take a guy like Kalambay to give him a boxing lesson.

    Easy tiger.

I hear you about Lamotta and how he was winning up until the shoulder injury took place, but boxing isn't fought over three rounds. We don't know what would have happened later on in the fight.
Sure, you can draw inferences from what already transpired, but it's only an inference.
The dynamics of a fight change from round to round, as you well know.
