I think name appropriation is equally likely, or at least maybe he said he was from St. Louis (Archie’s stomping grounds) when he wasn’t really. Look up how many guys adopted names like Dempsey and Sharkey after more famous namesakes had their heydays. Neither is such a common name that so many fighters with that last name should show up, the vast majority after the Jacks were well known — statistical improbability would put it mildly.
There was definitely some sort of bout — almost certainly an exhibition — scheduled between Archie Moore (not Fake Arch) and Superman actor George Reeves that was set to take place I think a few days or a week before Reeves died of an apparent suicide. Reeves had reportedly gotten himself in the best shape he’d been in for years and had some background in boxing or martial arts and he was apparently good friends with Archie. But the poster in the link has been outed as a fake.
It says "George" Reeve. The actor was "Christopher" Reeve. If that's him, why did they change the name? Kinda weird.
Christopher Reeve was Superman in the 80s. George Reeves was Superman in the 50s, and I believe that is him (or supposed to be him) in the poster. George apparently had boxing experience before becoming an actor.
Missed this post, but when I was quickly looking into it, I discovered the same. Interesting stuff. Rumor has it he was going to wear his Superman outfit. I never saw any episodes from the old Superman, but I remember my old man discussing that show when I was a kid, and being totally amazed to learn that a Reeve played Superman after a Reeves had the role previously.
To bring this to the next level, we need to convince a modern boxer to impersonate Archie Moore. Not the actual Archie Moore, but the fake Archie Moore. And then see whether Boxrec is willing to put up a page for Fake Fake Archie Moore.
