This isn't a late 29 year-old Mariciano being placed into a position of beating a 39 year-old legend in Joe Louis into the ground. These guys' age difference was less than 3 years!!! RJJ beat his last three and did look better losing in TARVER III than winning in TARVER I or getting KTFO in TARVER II. Bitching about the would of, should of, could ofs is the stuff of nuthuggers when the fighter is still fighting.

Because Joe is a cocky SOB like RJ and fights with his hands down and comes running in. RJ would simply capitalize in this flaw. :good

so in essence clinton woods = joe calzaghe :rofl

You do remember clinton woods right? big fella not very mobile average hand speed. Joe Calzaghe fast, agile, high work rate with ring smarts.

Yeah similar style of fighter would produce a similar result.

Probably the best post in this thread IMO.

If Roy was such a "clear" favorite to beat Calzaghe when both were in their primes, then he would've at least been more competitive in their fight tonight.

He only really does it when he feels he is on top in a fight.
He dont just run in with the chin sticking out saying hit me in all his fights.

I think that's accurate. In that case, RJ would've simply outpointed Joe to a UD. Even tonight, RJ's hand speed was almost on par with Joe. Prime RJ.....

This is a good reasoning for Roy putting Joe down, maybe more than once, but thats assuming Joe would be that careless if he was getting battered everytime he did it, the man is not a fool, he would'nt do it as much. This still doesnt explain why people are so ready to say he KO's him, he couldnt KO anyother Elite fighter so why Joe.

It would make for a good fight, the issue I bring up would be that if you did turn the clock back a few years, Joe wouldn't have the fragile hand problem either, so you would have the same high workrate, southpaw frustration and much more powerful punches. As I said in the beginning of the thread, it's all hindsight!

Bravo. Unfortunately rationale ****ing thought is not very popular here on this board. Aside from your excellent point that RJJ has never knocked out an elite fighter at 175, there is also the poin that Calzaghe has NEVER been close to being knocked out or seriously stunned, and has come back stronger in all three knockdowns.

So bollox to any idiots predicting "Prime RJJ domintes Calzaghe and TKO in 5,6,7,8"

    Yeah ****ing right.

Considering how bad RJJ got beaten tonight, Prime RJJ versus Prime JC is a 50/50 in my opinion.

Much props to Calzaghe. He put on a show tonight and is deserving of respect from the boxing world after retiring with an undefeated record. With that said he would have gotten embarrassed if he pulled those same stunts he pulled tonight against a prime RJJ. Jones is clearly a shot fighter who can't pull the trigger any longer but a prime Jones would never allow anyone to expose their head the way Calzaghe did. Calzaghe dared Jones to hit him all night long by dropping his guard and exposing his face and the prime RJJ, who might be the fastest boxer ever would have made him pay with his lunging left hook. I take nothing away from Joe tonight but he's not in the same class as prime Roy.
