He was thin in the arms relative to his pear shape, with a total absence of definition. Holmes is probably the least impressive looking Heavyweight Champion prior to Tyson Fury I can think of.
Larry was a championship fighter but he also was a businessman. I said in another thread, unlike so many remnants of this sport, he came out with his wits and his cash, it’s hard to argue with how he played it.
Like you said previously, I guess those less impressive looking bodies just add to things like stamina. Holmes came back from Shavers' right and Fury came back from Wilders'. Maybe I'll get a body shape like that someday...
I am actually jealous of those guys, the average male metabolism in my family locks us into being scarecrows our whole lives.
The one on there I agree with is possibly Witherspoon. He had a great chin. Smith and Weaver, if they tried going for it they'd be in the same boat as Norton imo.
Being 6-3 with an 82" reach helps more than chiseled features. And fighters are fighters, not show ponies. Larry had a great gas tank, great recuperative power and top-level quicks for a man his size. He could stay very cool under fire and was a natural born fighter with a mean streak. I'll take all that over an Adonis 7 days a week.
he would probably lose a fight, just like he lost to Jimmy Young or Ali. Not because it would be worse, but no one is 100% in every fight and everyone has weak moments sometimes. If he had met someone suitable on a bad day, he might have lost. I think Whitearspoon would suit his style, but players like Tucker, Page, Douglas, Tubbs would be uncomfortable. George was better than all of them and I would consider him the favorite, but I'm sure one of them would beat him in the end.
The modern Adonis aesthetics don't work very well in the ring at the highest levels. See: Anthony Joshua.
I’m not surprised given the way the game is approached nowadays. Has a lot more to do with modern attitudes. That’s why you see lots of well-built Champions with staying power in decades past.
