The whole subtopic started with this: That's what everyone was responding to. You put out a few opinions about the matter that were even keeled. Literally nobody responded to your posts. You just suddenly interjected yourself into the group of people being accused of using skin color to judge boxing.
Did you somehow manage to miss this post of mine? It links to a post where I argue that Marciano's skin color did indeed play a huge role in his post-career ascendancy to immortality. It immediately preceded the post where he accused people with my beliefs of being closet racists. That's why I responded.
Was Marciano's brother banned from attending the press conference? If so, he shouldn't have attended. If he wasn't breaking any laws than I don't see a big issue.
Well that's great, but nobody responded it, or you. But if you honestly want to carry the flag for that argument, go right ahead. What indicates to you that Marcianos ethnicity has any more to do with his assessment than it does with a fighter like Jack Dempsey, Lennox Lewis, Muhammad Ali or Manny Pacquiao? Where do you draw the line between cultural pride, and biased assessment? Are there any examples you can provide that link the two from otherwise credible sources?
Cool. I'll move it to it's own topic. It's worth discussion and putting forth as a poll whether or not Marciano's insanely high estimations in head to head match-up and in legacy are in any part (and what part?) a product of racial identification.
I think the fact he retired undefeated is why he is rated so high. Ali, Louis, Dempsey, all suffered prime losses whereas Rocky didn't.
Also, I'm not seeing this evidence for him being insanely highly rated head to head. His fans to me don't seem much worse than the Dempsey or Ali supporters.
If you have accused Marciano's fans of bigging him up because he is white, then yes, you are a racist projecting. "Some of my best friends are...." is one of the oldest excuses in the book.
Jamaican ? Did he even beat a single fighter from the West Indies ? Prime or shot ? I don't think so.
Marciano gets a huge push from the patriarchy. His manliness is often waived around like a flag! Believe Rocky Marciano would be viewed very differently if we learned that Rocky Marciano was in fact a woman!
A man who becomes a professional boxer and elevates himself to world class status and a world championship,a man who challenges for that championship with a torn biceps muscle in left arm , his" money arm," is no coward. A boxer who challenges the most fearsome man in his division when he himself is coming out of retirement and past his best is no coward. A fighter who gets up after being floored by the most destructive puncher of his era, gets up and goes on to win is no coward. Any "civilian" stating so is a buffoon, and should be summarily dismissed out of hand, never to be taken seriously when he opens his mouth to talk about pugilism ,because he has terminally discredited himself in the eyes of all right thinking boxing aficionados. I have a mental picture of you ,in the ring with a now fat and aging Larry Holmes, having read your asinine statement he is not in a good mood .It is a very comforting picture.
