Because Khan is a European McCloskey has had to relinquish his EBU belt in order to fight for the WBA. I could understand this rule if the Khan fight was for a lessor belt than the European, but it seems harsh. Would Chisora have to vacate his British & Commonwealth belts if he challenged Haye, or does the BBBOC & Commonwealth Council have different rules. Rendell Munroe is not eligable to fight for his old EBU belt, until he gains another victory because you cannot fight for the belt following a defeat. The manner or level of the defeat does not matter, nor does the quality of the opponent you need to beat to gain elibility. Munroe could fight for any World belt without a come back victory
I think its a fair rule if you fight for a world title you should have to vacate regional belts. plus McCloskey pulled out of a defence and purse bids for his mandatory were due.
The rule only applies because Khan is a European, if he challenged Bradley his Contintental belt would be safe if he lost
don't think it was, I seem to remember Warren claiming that he was confident that he could land the winner a world title shot.
it just further dilutes the quality of fighter competing for tittles , he vacates the title looses to khan then has to get another cheap W under him before he can challenge the pretender for his old belt whom ever that may be
Isn't the EBU rule you cannot fight for title coming off a loss? So must of been a world title eliminator or international belt.
I think the "loss rule" has been recently scrapped. and rightly so. with regards vacating. you automatically vacate a european title upon the first bell of a world title fight that you are in
The "loss" rule has recently been scrapped its now done on a conditional system. ie the EBU will approve someone if they feel they are a worthy challenger regardless if they are coming off a loss. Hence DeGale getting a shot.
I bet the rule was changed about the same time the WBO instigated the 4 month rule for the Inter-Continental belts:deal

Rule is now discretionary, hence Michael Sprott can also challenge Dimitrenko, despite losing in Prizefighter.
