Just watched it yesterday at your suggestion. Good, scrappy fight. I thought the right guy won, though Beard did rally bravely down the stretch. He looked a little green to be in a fight like that with only 12 bouts under his belt though. Odd matchmaking.

    Thanks for the recommendation!

    Alvarez: 2,10,12
    Golovkin: 1,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,11

    Alvarez: 1,2,3,6,12
    Golovkin: 4,5,7,8,9,10,11

Both fights I felt Golovkin won, but there were enough swing rounds to justify the official decision.

Re-watched Juan LaPorte vs Ruben Castillo for the first time in a while.

    LaPorte 10-9
    Castillo 10-9
    Castillo 10-9
    LaPorte 10-9 (close)
    Castillo 10-9
    Castillo 10-9
    LaPorte 10-9
    LaPorte 10-9
LaPorte 10-9 (close, but LaPorte hurt Castillo badly at the end of the round and did enough damage to overcome Castillo's early control)
LaPorte 10-8 (standing 8, might have called it 10-8 anyway. Castillo took a hiding)
LaPorte 10-8 (knockdown scored, heavy enough to overcome Castillo's control of the round)
LaPorte 10-8 (knockdown scored by LaPorte in the closing moments)

    116-109 LaPorte.

Two of the judges only wound up giving Castillo a single round, which is pretty unfair.

Really, really good fight; Castillo had great fundamentals and could throw combinations for days. LaPorte, for his part, adopted his usual approach of sleepwalking for extended stretches before doing exceptional work when he woke up. He was about as fired up as I've ever seen him in the second half of this fight, and looked about as good as he did at any point in his career.

In any hypothetical matchup that involves LaPorte, I'm likely picking him to have impressive moments and win clear rounds against anyone he faces, no matter how good. But, his inconsistency and lack of work rate make it difficult to imagine him scoring a definitive win over the very best featherweights in history.

    Alvarez vs Fielding.

This is just a brutal mismatch.

Canelo at SMW is so much faster than his opponents, his in the pocket front foot defence really suits him as the faster man.

    And that body work. Ouch.

Drops fielding every round, knocking him out with a body shot in the third.

I watched this one a few months ago this is how i scored it, we actually had the same score.

    Ruben Castillo vs Juan LaPorte

    1 Castillo
    2 LaPorte
    3 Castillo
    4 LaPorte
    5 Castillo
    6 Castillo
    7 LaPorte
    8 LaPorte
    9 LaPorte
    10 LaPorte 10-8 standing 8 count
    11 LaPorte 10-8 knockdown
    12 LaPorte 10-8 knockdown

    Juan LaPorte 116-109

So i watched this fight after it got recommend to me by @salsanchezfan @scartissue firstly i just want to say thanks for the recommendation, i really enjoyed the fight.

I thought the 1st half of the fight Castillo boxed nicely, he had some nice combinations and left hooks to the body. And he was out landing Laporte, so i felt Castillo had a 4-2 lead after 6 rounds.

But then the momentum of the fight turned around quite abruptly, as LaPorte come out for the 7th round meaning business. Maybe sensing he was behind and he started being alot more aggressive and landing the right hand.

But the moment where fight really turned around was the 9th round, i actually thought Castillo made a nice comeback in that round. And i was about to score it for him, until LaPorte badly stunned him in the last 20 seconds or so. So i felt LaPorte won the round based on that.

Castillo still feeling the effects of the 9th round, took a standing 8 count in the 10th. And took a tremendous beating, so much so i was actually somewhat close to scoring 10-7.

But after that round amazingly Castillo showing alot of heart, actually made a nice comeback in the 11th round. And i was just about to score it for Castillo. Until out of nowhere LaPorte floors him in the final seconds of the round.

The 12th round Castillo didn't have much left as he was floored again, and luckily for him title fights were no longer 15 rounds. So he was able to last the distance.

Overall an exciting fight with a good contrast of styles, it really was a fight of two halves.

David Tua v Oleg Maskaev (some crap title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Tua
    Round 2: 10-9 Maskaev
    Round 3: 10-9 Maskaev
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Maskaev
    Round 7: 10-9 Maskaev
    Round 8: 10-9 Maskaev
    Round 9: 10-9 Maskaev
    Round 10: 10-9 Tua
Round 11: Tua drops and stops Maskaev

Total through 10 completed rounds: 98-94 Maskaev (actual scores: 98-93 Maskaev, 95-95 Even and 96-94 for Tua)

When I first saw this live I was a huge fan of Tua's and to be honest, I was pacing intently waiting for Tua to drop the bomb on Maskaev, thus really missing some of the finer nuances of Tua's opponent. IMO, Oleg Maskaev was fighting a masterpiece against an extraordinary puncher. Maskaev's jab, right and left combos and extremely subtle footwork was a pleasure to watch. His footwork kept him perfectly positioned to step just outside of Tua's range or step forward with a 3-punch combo. Truly an underrated fighter. Tua himself was always amazing when he let his punches fly, which pulled his fat from the fire several times in his career. But this is an underrated fight, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

    Ryan Rhodes v Jamie Moore

Top notch domestic dust up between light middleweights Moore and Rhodes in a proper Northern grudge match (Manchester v Sheffield, Lancashire v Yorkshire, etc, etc).

Moore started strongly and was busier than Rhodes, who paced himself by picking his shots. Rounds 3, 4 and 5 were close calls and I’m not surprised that the judges were split on the scoring at the time of the stoppage.

Round 6 was a good one for Moore but then Rhodes put Moore down hard, seemingly out of nowhere at the start of round 7. Moore was in big trouble but to his credit, he showed great heart to battle his way back into the round and looked to be back on steady feet when he got tagged hard again by Rhodes and stuck on the ropes. He was taking a beating when the ref rightly stepped in.

    Good, fun fight.

    1 9-10
    2 10-9
    3 9-10 (close)
    4 9-10 (close)
    5 10-9 (close)
    6 9-10
    7 Rhodes TKO Moore

    Alvarez:2,3,4,5,6,8,12
    Jacobs:1,7,9,10,11

Jacobs takes an early feeling out round with his quicker jabs, using his reach advantage well.

But then the next 5 rounds see Canelo stalking forward behind that pawing jab, looking for openings to counter, and he does this excellently, sweeping the rounds giving himself a very commanding lead.

Round 7 sees Canelo slow down a bit but Jacobs looks like he's just getting started, again able to exploit his physical advantages to drive Canelo back and outland him.

Round 8 was very close, I felt like Canelo countered Jacobs more often than not and he took this round.

The next 3 rounds see Jacobs again take control behind that jab and those quick long combinations.

The last round was again very close, but I felt like Canelo had a bit of urgency about him and managed to get some good work in with those counters.

Some rounds very hard to score and a decision for Jacobs would have easily been justifiable. But as it is, I give it Canelo 115-113

    Alvarez:6, 7, 10, ko
    Kovalev:1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9

Kovalev was absolutely dominating this fight, and it seemed a perfect strategy until the ending.

He was using his range, firing quick combinations and pacing himself really well. Canelo countered every now and again but was largely just a spectator in this fight.

People point to the arm punches of Kovalev as proof he was taking a dive, for me it's his only realistic strategy. He's not just cutting through Canelo like a knife through butter and Canelo is too good a counter puncher to go in recklessly.

Kovalev was so in control and didn't look close to gassing.

    But damn, that ending.

    Huge ko for Canelo.

    Smith:2

Callum Smith was such a non entity this fight. He came alive in round 2 whilst Canelo was still warming up, but then barely landed another punch all night.

Canelo is really suited to this weight. He has the mass, strength and durability for 168, plus he has a huge speed advantage over everyone here.

And I love front foot defence, probability the style I most appreciate in boxing.

And this fight proves that punches blocked on the arm mean nothing lol.

Very good victory against the man who was, rightly or wrongly, the number 1 in the division.

How did Mayweather stop him coming forward lol.

    Yildrim:

Alvarez didn't look the smaller man in the ring here tonight. And there was a lot more of stand and trade with mustard on the shots.

    Lovely 1-2 to drop Yildrim.

Corner waved it off after the third.

Mandatory defence, but it's another opponent who's graced the top ten rankings.

    David Tua vs Oleg Maskaev

    1 Tua
    2 Maskaev
    3 Maskaev
    4 Tua
    5 Maskaev
    6 Maskaev
    7 Masakev
    8 Tua
    9 Maskaev
    10 Tua
    11 Tua wins by TKO

    96-94 Masakev

Just watched this fight based on your write up, never actually seen the full fight only the stoppage at the end.

Maskaev did box a good smart fight behind the jab, my issue was he seemed to be pecking away with the jab a bit. And his punches wern't that hard, he was fighting the fight like a very good amateur boxer. Piling up points but not really looking to hurt his man, and even though he was out boxing Tua, i thought Tua nicked a few rounds. I preferred the harder more effective punches from Tua in some rounds, compared to the 20 or so pecking jabs from Maskaev.

I also felt Tua always looked dangerous in the fight despite being behind on points, in most of the rounds he was able to find Maskaev. But just not on a consistent basis. The 10th round Tua started to turn it up a gear, and i felt like the fight had turned around by that point. Until finally Tua caught Masakev in the 11th round and that was that.

Good contrast of styles and a nice comeback win from Tua.

    Alvarez: 2,3,8,ko
    Saunders:1,4,5,6,7

I thought this was a very slow burner. The first 3 rounds were very close with not a lot in them as neither guys offered a lot offensively speaking.

But in round 4 BJS seemed to get a wave of confidence and I thought he began to absolutely box Canelos ears off. Canelo at this point was limited to the odd body counters which weren't enough to steal the rounds.

However they were enough to slow BJS down and despite having huge success in rounds 4,5,6,7 and the start of 8, he got caught in range, Canelo landed a huge left hook and then pushed his **** in for the rest of the round.

BJS quit after round 8 which, if you're in the know, is an amazing bout of poetic justice.

Excellent win against another high risk low reward fighter with a difficult style.
