Sal, I scored this awhile back. Although our scores differ I think we can agree it was a damn good fight.

    Iran Barkley v Jorge Amparo

    Round 1: 10-9 Barkley
    Round 2: 10-9 Barkley
    Round 3: 10-9 Barkley
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-8 Barkley (scores a knockdown)
    Round 6: 10-9 Amparo
    Round 7: 10-10 Even
    Round 8: 10-9 Amparo
    Round 9: 10-9 Barkley (scores a knockdown)
    Round 10: 10-9 Amparo

Total: 97-94 Barkley (actual scores: 96-94, 96-94 and 98-90 - although boxrec has it as 96-90)

This was a terrific fight - well worth anyone to watch. Barkley weathered a heavy storm after being severely cut in the 6th. Amparo was tough as nails, but was more of a clubbing puncher. If he had a sharper punch he may have ended this. The announcers railed about the knockdowns, calling them slips in the heavy rain, but I thought they were both legit. You have to read the body language and look at the replays. IMO both legit. I think Bernstein had Amparo winning but he left things late. One more thing, I scored the 9th 10-9 because I would have given the round to Amparo if not for the knockdown. Barkley just didn't do enough that round for a 10-8 IMO. Anyways, again, terrific fight.

    Tommy Hearns v Virgil Hill

    WBA LightHeavyweight Title

I enjoyed watching this one. The fight was pretty close for the first 4 rounds…I had it
2 rounds each…before Hearns took over with a masterclass of jab and move, belying his age by outboxing the unbeaten younger champion in what was an efficient, skilful and methodical performance. Hill was far too cautious, probably a bit intimidated by what damage Hearns’ right hand could do, which incidentally caught Hill a few times, causing Hill to retreat into his shell at times.

For a few reasons this was my favourite Tommy Hearns performance…it showcased his excellent all round boxing skills, which sometimes gets forgotten by some, due to his phenomenal KO power sometimes overshadowing his superb boxing ability.

    Hearns 9-10 Hill
    Hearns 10-9 Hill
    Hearns 10-9 Hill
    Hearns 9-10 Hill
    Hearns 10-9 Hill
    Hearns 10-9 Hill
    Hearns 10-9 Hill
    Hearns 10-9 Hill
    Hearns 10-9 Hill
    Hearns 9-10 Hill
    Hearns 10-9 Hill
    Hearns 9-10 Hill

    Hearns 116-112 Hill

It’s easy to lock in on Hearn’s power and overlook the fact that he never got outboxed by anyone — not SRL, not Virgil Hill … not anybody.

Correct. Hearns was a super skilled boxer. I often wonder if he wasn’t drawn into a war with Hagler and decided to box from distance as he was more than capable of doing of course, would he have won it. Hagler may well have caught up with him in the end, but that’s by no means any kind of certainty.
Hindsight is 20/20 vision and unfortunately we’ll never know.

Alberto Davila vs Frankie Duarte 2

    1 Davila
    2 Duarte
    3 Davila
    4 Davila 10-8 knockdown
    5 Davila
    6 Duarte
    7 Duarte
    8 Davila
    9 Duarte
10 Duarte wins by TKO on a cut

    86-84 Davila

Great fight disappointing end though because the cut was caused by a headbutt and not a punch, Davila had the better of early on outworking Duarte boxing beautifully moving in an out like he did vs Zarate early on. Duarte started to get into the fight after 5 round, where the tables turned and now he was outworking Davila landing that long right hand of is.

Overall i have no idea who would've won this fight without the cu,t as it was perfectly poised after 9 rounds. I guess maybe Duarte looked slightly stronger later in the fight ? but honestly at this point there was very little to choose between them, outside of the flash knockdown in round 4.

If @salsanchezfan @Jel @scartissue have any more of these fights to recommend from little guys in 70s/80s it would be appreciated it.

Another quick fight i watched today is Vince Phillips vs Alfonso Sanchez, i didn't bother keeping a scorecard as it only lasted a round haha. I wanted to refresh my memory on Phillips because i've been debating about him recently, overall Sanchez to me didn't seem like he had the heart to be a true hardened professional I think Larry Merchant said it best. "Now we know that once Sanchez goes down he stays down".

That was such a good fight, and what a totally different kind of fight than their first encounter years before. In that one, Duarte was just crushed, it's like he didn;t even show up to the party. This was obviously very different.

Try Yuh-Demarco 1 if you haven't seen it. Truly one of the best fights of the decade, and few talk about it because Yuh was so unknown here.

D, if you haven't seen the 'battle of the typhoon' between Albert Davila and Enrique Sanchez you would love it. And you will also see why it is called that. I won't post my card on this bout because you deserve to see it unfettered by anyone else's opinion.

    Holy crap, what a fight!

Derrell Coley v Kip Diggs (NABF welterweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Diggs
    Round 2: 10-9 Coley
    Round 3: 10-8 Diggs (scores a knockdown)
    Round 4: 10-9 Coley
Round 5: 10-7 Diggs (scores a knockdown and then Coley is penalized a point for hitting after the bell)
Round 6: 10-8 Coley (Coley wins the round and then Diggs is penalized a point for hitting after the bell)
    Round 7: 10-8 Diggs (scores a knockdown)
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 Coley
    Round 10: 10-8 Coley (scores a knockdown)
Round 11: Coley drops and stops Diggs

Total through 10 completed rounds: 93-92 Diggs (actual scores: 94-90 Diggs, 93-91 Coley and a 92-92 Even)

My God, keep your calculators handy on this one guys. A terrific little scrap. D, I agree with what you mention about there were some knockdowns not called. In the 1st round for instance, Coley went down twice and in the eyes of another ref could have and probably would have scored them both knockdowns. Thanks again to @Dynamicpuncher and @Pepsi Dioxide for putting this on our radar.

Glad you enjoyed it special thanks to @Pepsi Dioxide for bringing it to my attention as i'd never heard of it, i'm not sure why it isn't talked about more. For me it's one of the best Welterweight fights of the 90s, overall i've watched a few of Derrell Colley's fights and he's always entertaining for me. His fight with Oba Carr was one of the better Welterweight fights of the 90s aswell.

    Kevin Kelley Troy Dorsey

    1 Kelley
    2 Dorsey
    3 Kelley
    4 Dorsey
    5 Dorsey
    6 Dorsey
    7 Kelley
    8 Kelley
    9 Kelley
    10 Dorsey
    11 Dorsey
    12 Kelley

    114-114 Draw

I've been waiting to see this fight again for years, as i didn't score it ages ago when i downloaded it.

I feel like there was a few key momentum swings in this fight. Rounds 4-6 were good rounds for Dorsey and it looked like Kelley might get overwhelmed. To Kelley's credit he sucked it up and boxed well between rounds 7-9, Dorsey comeback and had a strong spell in rounds 10-11, even badly hurting Kelley in round 11 and appeared to be somewhat close to stopping him. All credit to Kelley for sucking it up and having a strong 12th round, and appearing to have stunned Dorsey a few times with straight left hands aswell.

Overall amazing fight even better than i remember, this for me is the definition of a draw, and i would even say this fight should of won FOTY over Bowe/Holyfield.

That fight hasn’t been on YouTube for quite a while - where did you see it? I’ve been looking around for it. EDIT: Ah, I see you downloaded it before.

Here’s my write up and card from when I saw it:

    Kevin Kelley v Troy Dorsey

For non-stop action I'm not sure I've seen one like this since Chacon-Boza 2. Dorsey set an unforgiving pace and never stopped throwing punches. Kelley did his best to match him but used a bit more lateral movement to outbox him in some of the latter rounds. With each round, just when I thought I had it figured out who was going to win, the other fighter came back. They could have fought this one in a phone box.

Almost every round was close and plenty could have gone either way so a draw seems fair to me even if the judges had it unanimous for Kelley.

    1 10-9 (what a start)
    2 9-10
    3 10-9
    4 9-10
    5 10-10
6 9-10 (ridiculous pace - every round is close so far)
    7 10-10 (couldn't split them, it's just relentless)
    8 10-9
    9 10-9
    10 9-10 (very close)
    11 9-10
    12 10-9

    Kelley 115-115 Dorsey

D, we had the same outcome and almost the same card except I hedged on a couple of rounds by making them even whereas you spilt those rounds between Dorsey and Kelley.

I really want to see this again.
