Watched David Tua-Hasim Rahman I today, fascinating fight :good This was a bout to detemine who got the right to fight for a HW title....Rahman was unbeaten but had yet to step up in class (Tua was a pretty big step up!)...and Tua had lost just once, in his war with the nutcase Ike Ibeabuchi. Rahman performed great, I must say....his jab was fantastic all through this fight and he was controlling Tua with ease while keeping up a tremendous workrate, he landed some terrific combos working off the jab and this in turn completely nullified Tuas offensive arsenal. After 2.59 into Round 9 I had in 88-83 to Rahman...then it all changed. Tua landed a decent left hook to Rahman which caused him to stumble into the ropes and unleased an absolutely hellacious left a split second after the bell which I'm shocked didnt spark Rahman out there and then, Rahman somehow stumbled back to the corner and it was clear he was ****ed. Into Round 10 and Tua does what Tua does best and he gets Rahman against the ropes and starts pummeling away causing the Ref to jump in and stop the bout, although by this time it seems Rahmans head had cleared and he wasnt that hurt. It was a very poor stoppage and I think the Ref stopped it based on the shot Tua landed the previous round, thinking Rahman was still in a bad way from it. Very enjoyable fight to watch.
Toney vs Barkley. This is one of my favorite Toney moments, taking out the "bully" Iran Barkley. Yes Iran was passed his prime but still "game" Toney took him out like a disgruntled bouncer lol Toney did stuff in the ring I have yet to see duplicated. I wanted Barkleys head on a plate, but Toney gave me his eye. lol It's just too bad we never saw Hopkins fight Toney. Everyday I got a new winner in that dream fight.
I watched yesterday: Froch vs Pinnock Froch vs Abrahams Froch vs Covill Froch vs Duffield Froch vs Odin Froch vs Davtyan All of them fairly routine apart from his fight against Odin who really pushed him (you could certainly argue he had a share of the first 4 rounds).
Great minds....:good Wasn't Toney just great to watch...with all he did i still consider him an underachiever though. I think Toney at 20 percent is better then most and i wouldn't quite call his career a waste but that being said he never lived up to his full 100 percent potential. I normally have a foot fetish in boxing (refer to Eric El Terrible's early fights and watch only his footwork to see what i mean) But i love how Toney didn't need footwork because he could lean on the ropes and work his slip game with his shoulder roll. He just had a ton of outside the ring problems and should of had a great "er" career then he had, but I still don't see anything in boxing today that can slip a punch like he could (lil Floyd aside). That lack of discipline is why his contemporaries like Roy and Bernard have surpassed him imo.
Calzaghe vs Eubank. The 'greeness' of Joe and Chris being passed it come together to make a competitive fight. Some will say Eubank was categorically shot and maybe he was as he'd 2 more fights after Joe and losing both to the cat and the fight before he'd lost to the old WBO strap holder who's name i can't even remember. But i give Joe credit for graduating from 4th grade to a Bachelor's Degree in one night because Chris started to come on like a mad man in the second half. And for anyone that questions Joe's skills...well let me introduce you to Kimbo Slice because the sweet science ain't your sport to follow.
what did you think of him NO MAS I think Magri is class, nice fast boxer but canfight it out when he needs to.
He was a gutsy fighter with lots of ability. He could box and have a tear up too.. But hung his whiskers out a bit... He was one of a number of fighters that were about when I got into boxing as a kid. Minter, Magri, Watt, Hope and sadly the late Johnny Owen RIP
