Bobby Chacon vs Ruben Olivares 2 Wilfredo Gomez vs Royal Kobayashi - Brutal first knockdown. Sickening stuff. Fight should have been stopped there. It wasn't plain sailing up until that point for Gomez as Kobayashi was pressuring him, making Gomez very uncomfortable. Azumah Nelson vs Pat Cowdell - Another brutal Knockout. Pat was probably winning the round. Pernell Whitaker vs Azumah Nelson (118-113) - I don't think the fight was as close as the judges had it. Whitaker was boxed beautifully and Azumah couldn't land more than 5 clean shots all night. Whitaker's jab was fast and accurate which set up regular solid body shots. Sweet Pea showed great ring generalship and great mental strength to stick to his game plan for the entirety of every round. Superb performance.
i haven't seen this fight in ages but i do remember having whitaker miles ahead in for me one of his best performances
Jose Luis Ramirez vs Pernell Whitaker (113-118) Good performance from Whitaker. After the 5th round Ramirez picked up the pace and consequently won a couple of rounds. Before that Whitaker's jab was absolutely textbook and easily winning the rounds for him. The jab became less effective when the pace increased but Whitaker started throwing more counters on the inside, landing some clean shots which should have been enough to ensure he didn't lose those rounds. I think Pea got tired towards the end and was forced to spoil and hold, but Ramirez still wasn't landing enough to win the rounds in my opinion. Not a robbery, because it depends on what you like and some of the rounds were close. But I thought Whitaker won it handily.
robert wangila wud 4 sidney gomes , (last round only) this was wangila's pro debut so i guess it was a bit of a shock that his first pro fight went the distance as if my memory is correct he had been a bit of a banger at the Olympics . andrew maynard tko 1 zack worthy ,this was also maynards pro debut and maynard made short work of his outgunned and less skilled opponent and to be honest looked pretty well adjusted style wise to the pro's he looked unhurried and did not rush in blazing for the brief time the bout lasted kennedy mckinney won tko 2 david alers ,as with the other fighters this was mckinney's first fight in the pro ranks i always liked mckinney a good boxer with good speed and he was far superior to an opponent with a 3-5-1 record but at least was coming of a win michael carbajal won pts 4 will grigsby, again a pro debut this fight is from the second round onwards this was a good competative fight that i had carbajal winning but having to work hard .grigsby was only in his second pro having won his first and could of been given this one on a DQ carbajal had grigsby down in the 4th but then landed a decent right with grigsby on one knee while the ref was about to start the count instead of falling to the canvas and trying to get his opponent DQ'd grigsby got up and finished the fight. grigsby would of course not be beaten again until ricardo lopez would take his IBF light-flyweight world tittle ray mercer won tko 3 jesse mcghee , (another pro debut) mercer looked big against a fighter nicknamed THE TANK and at only 5ft 7inches tall mcghee did look as wide as a tank. for me mercer found him hard to hit a times (klit fans take notice)simply because he found it hard punching down but mercer had still won the 1st and second rounds handily and ended the fight not to long into the 3rd with about 3 or 4 good shots which sent THE TANK across the ring and down with the ref not counting but waving the fight over. mercer showed power here but in this fight was all right hand in the power shot department with no real left hook and when he jabbed his right hand slipped to almost his waist all the above fights were on the undercard to duran vs barkley tittle fight

Shane Mosley vs. De La Hoya 1. Shane stepped out of his fast brawler role and actually boxed in this fight. Great performance, he fought one of his best fights. Shane with video game speed kept this fight strictly in the center of the ring. It must've been politics to give Oscar 1/3 of the cards because this was not a SD fight. It has to be asked was this Shane aided by the BALCO labs' concoction though? I know Shane admitted to juicing but only for the rematch which I thought he lost anyway, but Shane was so close to the BALCO people with that special "cream" they had that flew under the radar of any doping tests. I'm not an expert, but I would have to say that Shane used the cream a lot more that people think...and I also think Holyfield did some shady stuff after the "alleged" heart incident but I digress.
Felix Trinidad Vs Freddie Pendleton Cautious opening from tito, started to open a lil bit in the third but not as busy as were used to seeing. absolutly devastating left hook to the body to finish him, think the commentaters were playing it down abit Ray Lovato Lovato's a game lil ****er and fair play to him for taking it to tito. Shud really have been punished earlier in the fight when standing in front of Tito with his hands down. never the less he got the job done with a lethel combo in round 7 Kevin Lueshing Britains very own, Trinidad down in the second, lovely left hook, just as the commentaters were mockinh Lueshing's trainer for saying his guy dont punch that hard LOL. Round 3 tito lands a ruthless trademark lefthook to send Lueshing down and twice again as the round closers and ref stops the fight. Brave effort from L:eushing while it lasted. still traded at times when hurt but Tito to sharp, to powerful. Troy Waters Funny delayed reaction to a left hook in the opener. Tito pinned him on the ropes and every1 of his shots was blocked until the last 1 landed and Waters cudnt beat the 10 count. Was this Tito's first fight at 154 :think Mahenge Zulu Big 3rd round for Tito, Double left hook in the forth and game over. Pandimonium in the ring after the fight aswell LOL 1 thing i noticed so far watching trinidad, when he throws his right hand he dont bring it back to his chin, which probly explains gettin dropped by left hand counters on the odd occosion :hey.
Felix Trinidad Vs Pernall Whitaker Pernall Whitaker had been inactive 490 days, Tito 318 days. Both is their longest period out of the ring to date. Whitaker starts sharp and lands a nice left hand only Tito to dump him on his arse. IMO goes a lil down hill from here on for sweet pea as Tito starts to land and hurts him. Only seen Sweet Pea once before against Julio Cesar Chavez, so am assuming its not just the long lay effecting him here. Doesm he like to get involved in brawl now and again aswell. He seems to forgot about ''sitting on the toilet'' as Slip calls it. Big 8th round for Tito, but as we get in the latter rounds sweet pea turns to survival mode, altho i think faking low blows wud be a harsh statement, he was acting abit. Should of been a knockdown in the last IMO. Felix Trinidad Vs Hugo Pineda Pineda 1lb under the supple middle limit, 167 on the night, looked massive. Some good head movement from Tito in the early rounds. Might sound like a broken record now but again, a lovely left hook, this time to the body ended the trinidad onslaught
Nonito Donaire v Moruti Mithalane Kind of a 'so-so' performance from Nonito here. Didn't box beautifully or do anything particularly wrong, just average. Probably a motivational thing, Mithulane's a tough African with a decent record. Fights with a high guard and could probably fight all night long, i had Nonito up 48-47 going into the 6th when the doctor stopped the fight due to a cut on Mithalane's eyelid, caused by a punch. Donaire switched to southpaw a few times during the fight, mainly from the 4th onwards as he struggled against the awkward african. In his most recent fight against Hernan Marquez he fought southpaw from the opening bell and only took Marquez out when he switched back to orthodox, i don't like this kid as a southpaw. He looks alot easier to hit clean and it doesn't look as natural for him. He's a beautifully balanced fighter though, the way he transfers the weight onto his back foot to avoid punches and uses it as a springboard to transfer back onto the front foot to counter punch is masterful. I think he's a special fighter Nonito, Arum wants to buck his ideas up and gets the kid's profile up because with this bantamweight division the way it is now, these next few years could make him a major p4p player.
^^^ Totally agree. I'm a massive fan of Nonito and think he's an excellent fighter. Beautiful to watch, so smooth with a deadly left hook, as Vic Darchinyan found out the hard way. But it's so frustating being a fan of his; he's been managed horribly since the win over Darchi, although people ducking him may have played some part in it. Arum has said that he is planning Donaire-Montiel for sometime this year. Hopefully that comes off!
