Chavez vs. Rosario. Chavez was awesome in this fight, perhaps the best display of pressure fighting i've seen. Not many people know this but Chavez was actually the underdog in this fight. Rosario was perhaps the biggest puncher of the 80's and Chavez wasn't even taking any notice of his power. It's brillient to watch because pressure fighters of this calibre are very rare. Chavez understood the key to effective pressure...the accuracy of his shots, mixing defense and offense and being so cool but urgent at the same time, he mastered it. Only Roberto Duran did it better IMO. Watching JC Chavez you can see why Castillo learnt so much from him. All pressure fighters must study Chavez.
Pernell Whitaker - Juan Nazario Easy night's work for Sweet Pea to unify the titles. Strange delayed reaction for the KO but it was a nice step out of range then back in with a jab and overhand right to get the job done. Worth remembering that Nazario had only ever been stopped once before by the above mentioned Edwin Rasario and it took him 8 rounds to do the job.
Didn't he walk him into a straight left? I think it may have caught him on the temple on it's way to the chin, hense the delayed reaction. Pea certainly looked pleased with his nights work, i think he might've done a line of coke beforehand.
Indeed it was... excuse me, I've had a couple. He looked very happy... I like the way in running from corner to corner after the fight he almost trips over Nazario's body. How far back does Pea's drug use go?
I don't know really, I know he grew up in "projects" and was surrounded by very dodgy characters not only in his youth, but also in his boxing career. I would say it started catching up with him around the mid 90's. There was rumours of him "letting himself go" in Holland, so probabily after the Jake the snake or Rivera fight. Drugs where around him for most of his life though. Thankfully he didn't end up like Rocky Lockridge. Cocaine was treated so casually at that time, remember Ray Leonard was no angel neither.

Yeah, he's not the only one who's done it that's for sure. Drugs are usually associated with 'replacing the buzz' after Boxing so it is slightly unusual in that sense. My favourite story about drugs in boxing is that of Randall Cobb and Sonny Barch who were doing coke together the night before their fight. :nut
That is like Mando Ramos and one of his opponents Raul Rojo (I think), they were good mates outside of boxing and both guys were into drugs, drink, parties and women. So Ramos gets told by an interviewer that Rojo has been training hard in training camp and has stopped the partying. Ramos quickly states that he has not as they was out partying together the night before.
Juanma vs Rafael Marquez... Hadn't seen it until today. Great fight at times but not sure that Marquez's "injury" really made a difference. I think he would still have lost.
Nothing much was learned from that fight - his strengths and weaknesses both resonated loudly during the eight round slugfest. What was made violently clear is that we need to see more of him against the best of his peers - ones with a bit less ring wear than Marquez. Lopez may have iffy whiskers, but he's clearly a difficult man to knock out. And he reaffirmed his steely resiliency by surviving some scary moments against Marquez. It's relatively easy for good punchers to hurt him, but taking him from hurt to unconscious is another feat altogether.
