Whatever's on YouTube. Avelar will do for starters :good Then Chan-Hee Park, of course :yep Watch Borkhosor-Herrera instead :tong
@ fleaman thanks. Got tomorrow off so will hunt these down. Is that the Barkley who Duran fought? Hearns too I think.
Conteh was a brilliant aggressive counter puncher and showed it well against Hutchins, a very capable fighter who got beat up that night. Peach of a left hook as well.
Thats him, beat Hearns twice and had that epic fight with Duran :good All those Toney fights should be on YouTube I think :thumbsup Enjoy, and stay away from his Light Heavyweight tenure. Oh, my ****ing word atsch Vs Holyfield That's essential Toney viewing. If you like all that (you should) watch his first fight with Peter. Then watch Roy Jones dominate him :happy
I remember finding it odd that Barkley fought Gerrie Coetzee and Trevor Berbick in the 90s. (Retrospectively, obviously, as I was a kid at the time. But Thomas Hearns is my favourite boxer of all-time so I find it weird to think of Barkley then going onto fight Gerrie Coetzee.)
Yeah, Barkley did end up at HW in the end :-( He was a tough, tough man, and a big guy as well. Sadly I think he lives in poverty nowadays. He's got one eye IIRC. Always came TK scrap did 'The Blade'.
You really know most old fights off by heart don't you Flea Fair play to Hutchins he gave it a real go. Conteh was a damn fine talent, he could have reached tremendous heights in his career, if his head was in it 100%. That said he still had a stellar resume and has to be considered in the top 5 greatest British fighters of all time IMO.
He's said recently that he's "still got fight in him" and wants to "make one last run". Would rather not see him fight again. I'd say it's a pity he's broke now, but I know it's a bit patronising as it was his money to do as he pleased with. Just don't like the idea of great fighters ending up on the bread line. That's one boxing tradition that I'd gladly be done with.
Good on ya pal, what was the buzz like surrounding Conteh at the time? Were journo's, TV hyping him up? I wasn't even born :-( Wish i was around in that era.
I was only about 12 but it was a fantastic atmosphere at the Stadium and everyone was talking about it in Liverpool. Conteh was a household name around the country. Every time you turned the tele on he was on something, superstar of his day!
